Programming an Aftermarket Remote

Yay! Thanks to the suggestions of others here to use the key in the door lock instead of using the lock/unlock button on the armrest, to get around weak door lock actuators! We have successfully programmed our remote!!!

So, just try using the key in the door key hole, and clear the codes by turning the ignition key 5 times, the first time, then repeat the process, and only turn it 1 time. Another hint: do all of these things very quickly.

I'm trying to program a FOB remote that I got from amazon but I failed. I followed the programing instructions but it seems that I can't get the confirmation from the ECU that it entered the programing mode. Is it because I'm using the silver key? If yes and I need the plastic head one then I'm in deep S, as I got the car with thia one only.
I have a 2001 3rd gen with alarm(the one with indication LED on the left beside the central dif lock switxh), no immobilizerr (as far as I think) and one silver key with one keyless remote (works perfectly).
Any thoughts??

It works. the issue was the lock actuators. Using the key in the door works fine better than the switch in the door.

The manual assistance for the locks along with the clearing of all codes worked for me. I have had the 4runner for years with no working key fobs. Today is a joyous day. Thanks guys.

Tried countless times using the switch only to have the locks crap out on me on the 4th or 5th rep on the second round of cycling the locks, super frustrating!!
Now I have a working fob again. Thanks!

I just programmed a remote I had laying around to my '97, there is a button on the side of the box under my drivers seat, pushed it until the lights on the alarm thing on the center console came one, pushed some buttons and bam!

Only issue is it looks like this and one button works, but hey, it works!

I need to get a correct one someday when I can find a good deal on one.

Programming 2 key fobs

I've tried it about 50 times with different instructions and can only get one key fob programed. If I program one the other stops working.
What am I doing wrong?

So I finally was able to program my fob. AFTER I finally realized that its ONLY THE DRIVERS DOOR that needs to lock and unlock NOT ALL DOORS. I know it says clearly in the instructions but I missed that detail some how. I tryed this a bunch of times trying to get all of my locks to cycle 5 times as all my lock acuators are kinda lame. After I realized only one lock needs help not 4 I was able to program on my first try. Hope this helps some peeps.

Works!

I got mine to work - Yahoo!!
I followed first with NoliWan's instructions without success; then tried some of the other suggestions.
I thought that it would be good to clear everything by following the entire procedure using the 5 key-cycle option in 4-b below; then I performed the entire procedure again using the 2 key-cycle option in 4-b below. It worked just like it's supposed to!

From 1999 Toyota 4Runner - Free Keyless Remote Fob Entry programming instructions, procedures for all automotive vehicles
1. Start with key out of ignition, drivers door is open all others closed and
drivers door is unlocked.

2. Insert key into the ignition (Do NOT Turn) and Pull key out.

3. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.
A. Using the power lock switch on the drivers door, perform 5 lock/unlock cycles starting with lock. Use an even pace and try to go about one cycle per second. (1Cycle = 1 lock and 1 unlock).
B. Close, then open drivers door.

4. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.
A. Using the power lock switch on the drivers door, perform 5 lock/unlock cycles starting with lock. Use an even pace and try to go about one cycle per second. (1Cycle = 1 lock and 1 unlock).
B. Insert the key in the ignition cylinder.
C. Turn the ignition to ON (Do NOT Start) then back to OFF once to program remote while retaining the orginal remote codes. Twice to erase all orginal codes and add new remote. Three times to check how many remotes are programmed or five times to erase all original codes.
D. Remove the key from the ignition.

5. Within 3 seconds the power door locks should cycle automatically indicating successful entry into programming mode. Return to step 1 if the locks do not cycle at this point.

6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.
A. Press the lock and unlock buttons on the remote simultaneously for 1 second.
B. Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons, press the lock button by itself and hold for 2 seconds. Within 3 seconds, the door locks should cycle once indicating successful programming. If the door locks do not cycle, or cycle twice. Repeat steps A and B in step 6 as your remote has not been accepted.
C. Repeat steps A and B in step 6 for each new remote.

7. Close drivers door.

This worked perfectly! I followed these steps and programmed two new remotes purchased from eBay for $17 on a '99 4Runner on the first try! Thank you for posting these!

This worked for me. I could not get it in to programming mode, but your suggestion about using the key to lock and unlock five times must have been the kicker. Now, I can't get it to accept the steps 6a & 6b... always unsuccessful. But hey, I am making progress thanks to this set of instructions.

I've modified the original instructions a little bit in CAPS to make the programming work for my situation. You should be able to complete the programming if you're using a working key fob.

1. Start with the following conditions:
a. Key is out of the ignition
b. Driver door is open ( all other doors are closed)
c. Driver door is unlocked (other doors not a concern)

2. Insert the key into the ignition (don't turn it) and pull it out QUICKLY.

3. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:
a. Cycle the power locks 5 times (STARTS WITH LOCK THEN UNLOCK As 1 CYCLE(REPEAT 5x) AT ABOUT 1sec INTERVAL BETWEEN EACH CYCLE. IF YOUR ACTUATOR DOESN'T CYCLE THE LOCK/UNLOCK PROPERLY, STICK THE CAR KEY IN THE KEY-HOLE OUTSIDE OF THE DRIVER DOOR TO CYCLE THE LOCK/UNLOCK 5x. THE HORN SHOULD CHIRP THRU EACH CYCLE.

b. Close, then open the drivers door QUICKLY.

4. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:
a. Cycle the power locks 5 times (same as STEP 3A ABOVE).
b. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF (FAIRLY QUICK)
c. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF (FAIRLY QUICK).. SOMETIMES U MIGHT NEED ONLY 1 IGNITION CYCLE (STEP 4B ONLY), SKIP THIS STEP (4C)
d. Remove the key from the ignition.

5. Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should cycle LOCK/UNLOCK 2x (automatically)indicating successful entry into programming mode. Return to step 1 if the locks do not cycle AUTOMATICALLY at this point SINCE U HAVE NOT ACTIVATED THE PROGRAMMING MODE.

6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:
a. Press the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter
simultaneously for 1 second.
b. Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons,
press the lock button by itself and hold for 2 seconds.
Within 3 seconds, the door locks should cycle ( LOCK then
UNLOCK) once-- indicating successful programming [THIS IS IMPORTANT!!! LOCK/UNLOCK 1x = SUCCESSFUL, BUT 2x = NOT SUCCESSFUL]. If
the door locks don't cycle, or cycle twice. Repeat steps
6a and 6b--this remote has not been accepted. [YOU MIGHT HAVE TO PROGRAM THE REMOTE SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE IT WORKS (STEP 6A-6B). PAY ATTENTION TO 1x vs. 2x LOCK/UNLOCK AUTOMATIC CYCLE BY THE CAR TO DETERMINED WHETHER YOUR REMOTE WAS ACCEPTED OR SUCCESSFULLY PROGRAMMED]
c. Repeat steps 6a and 6b for EACH transmitter that will
operate the vehicle. [YOU CAN PROGRAM MORE THAN 1 REMOTE WHILE THE CAR IS IN PROGRAMMING MODE]
7. Close the driver door WILL LEAVE THE PROGRAMMING MODE BUT THE VEHICLE MIGHT SET OFF THE ALARM. STICK THE KEY INTO THE DRIVER DOOR KEY HOLE & TURN TO RESET THE ALARM. TEST YOUR NEWLY PROGRAMMED KEY FOB AT THIS POINT WITH ALL DOORS CLOSED.

Got it to work on 2001 SR5

After trying about 30 times with no success, I instantly got it to work with the following...

Simply push/pull the driver side door lock up and down manually instead of using the door lock switch on the armrest. I went quickly as well, and did the 5 up/down cycles within 5 seconds total.

I need some help in this matter everyone. I'm trying to program my new eBay remote fob and I'm having a big problem.

I have a god awful alarm on my 2001 4Runner SR5 Sport (if I could disable I would, but that's for another thread) that every time I go to step #4 the door locks quicker than I can reopen it and when I put the key in the ignition and pull it back out at the same time as trying to do the door the alarm system goes off. EVERY TIME!

I've done this over and over again and have the same result every time. If I can't even get it into program mode I can't use any of the suggested methods on this site or the site provided by the seller of the key fob.

Any one else have this problem? If so, how did you resolve it? Please help!

EDIT: After a lot of digging around under my dash/behind my kick panel I discovered I have an (apparently) aftermarket Audiovox PRO 9232 alarm system. I was able to find the owner's manual online and put the system into "Valet Mode" disabling the alarm functions. However, I am still unable to enter program mode for the eBay key fob I purchased. Could this be because of the aftermarket alarm? I am doing all of steps 1-4 correctly, even trying the "5 key turn" method suggested by kroboals in post #47 of this tread, with no luck. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Urgh. I can get into programming mode easily, but as soon as I press both the lock and unlock keys on the fob, step 6A, the door locks immediately cycle twice before I can even let go. I've completed the full cycle many times, no luck. Any help?

EDIT: If it helps anyone in the future, I had to do the five time on/off twice before I finally got the fob to work with the two time on/off cycle. Finally, success!
