Programming Instructions for keyless entry remote?

Ok, I went to the dealer this am. I explained my issue with my remote.
According the the Parts Guy and the Service Guy he spoke to. It is possible to have the wrong code (FCC number) remote but it will still "Take" the programming mode. It will however, not function as a remote for the locks or window.

I do not know if this is actually a true statement from them. They sold me a remote for a small discounted amount and programed it for me, no charge.

I now have a functioning remote! I just wanted to pass this new (to me) information on.

Im a green horn on this site, and to the 3rd gen 4runners. But getting a cheap Chinese remote seems to have caused alot of grief for some owners. Knowing that from this thread, ordered 2 from the dealer @$109.00 each.


You got blessed by getting new old stock, and the dealer programed for free? My dealer in rual Nm wanted $50! Sooo I bit the bullet and oredered the remotes and after re-reading this thread, figured my out my problem. It was sooo worth the money to have keyless entry.

This site is invaluable. Especially Tims DIY vids on YT.

Ebay Remotes

Figured I would give this a try. Bought a pair off Ebay for $15 to cut my losses if this did not work,

On the second try, I was able to program both and they work fine.

Not the greatest quality, will spring for an OEM next, but it is nice to have a fob again since for some reason, I needed one key to open the door and one for the ignition, unlike my previous 2002 4runner SR5, This one is a 2000. Thinking I do not have a master key.

And for even more oddness , the key that opened the doors is the silver one, no black plastic on it and it would only unlock from the drivers door and only lock the doors from the passenger door but in the rear gate it would do both, unlock, lock and put up and down the rear window. Maybe some dry graphite will solve that, next on the list.

So a working Fob is a good thing,

And we have an update. Forgot to check the rear window button. Just did, it sets off the alarm. O well, 2 out 3 not bad. At least it locks and unlocks. Time for an OEM, but these will be good for the extra set of keys.

Yes, They did the programming for free. However, I should explain the back story.
I bought my 4Runner for our home in Tucson. We like to cruise around the foothills by our ranch there. I had purchased quite a few items from the dealer.
They knew I was having issues with the remotes, I had 3 different FCC codes, on remotes that came with the 4runner.
After explaining my remote issues several times, while getting parts, I ended up giving my VIN and they looked it up.

None of my remotes were correct, even though they were the correct year range.
They had the correct one via the VIN number. Sold it to me for a discount and even did the programming for free. (I did tip him $20.00) It has worked perfect ever since.

I tried following these instructions with a fob ordered off ebay and cant seem to get my 4runner to go into the programming mode to accept new fobs. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I'll try again in the morning.

98 SR5 Keyless Entry?

So I recently purchased a 98 SR5 for my son to replace a 2002 Sport Edition that was totaled in an accident.
My question is was a keyless entry system available in the 98 4Runners? I have read though this thread and I am still confused as to it's availability. The 98 we bought did not come with any key fobs from the previous owner but he indicated that he seemed to remember that his father-in-law, who owned the vehicle before him, had a key fobs and remote entry and that he disabled or removed it for some reason.
I have looked under the seat (not under the carpet yet) and under the dash for any type of control unit but have not found anything yet. I have also looked under the hood and I do believe that the "chirper" unit is there on the passenger side. The vehicle does not have the glass breakage sensor security light thing to the left of the steering column but it does have a little red light in one of those little removable panels.
I would be grateful for any help or advice on what I could do to install a factory system from a salvaged 4Runner or if we would need to go with some type of aftermarket system.

2001 T4R fob

Just bought my 1st 4R (after nearly a year of searching for what I wanted).
It's an '01 SR5 2WD with several of teh Sport/Limited upgrades.. Anyway, It came with one fob and a plain silver Toyota key. The fob is FCC ID: HYQ12BBX so I ordered two replacements here on Ebay.

Will be the OP's instructions for programming once I receive these replacements. Also plan on going to the dealer and having two factory Toyota keys w the black plastic heads cut from the VIN.

My main question... when programming the two new fobs, will the original I have lose its programming or no? If so, I will only program one of the two that I will be getting in the next few days.

While locking/unlocking the vehicle with the automatic switch simultaneously lock/unlock the driver's side door manually by pushing/pulling the lock down/up.

I couldn't get it to work no matter what I tried till I tried to help the lock and unlocking manually.

I just got some eBay-purchased HYQ1512Y remotes to work with my 2000 Limited. A few notes:

1. When entering programming mode, I first had to clear all the stored remotes by using five ignition key turns instead of the two in the instructions. It cycled the locks five times to confirm the codes were erased. I then closed the door and started over, ending with cycling the ignition off to on twice as per the instructions and removing the key, but there was a second issue...

2. The instructions said to hold the lock and unlock buttons together for one second then press the lock button for two seconds. I found that my truck would do the two-lock-cycle rejection immediately upon pressing the lock button (or any other button). What worked was to simultaneously press the lock and unlock buttons then immediately release them as soon as you felt the buttons pop/make contact, then press and release the lock button. The truck would only accept the remote if you did it this way.

3. An HYQ1512Y from an Avalon (with the icon of a popping trunk for the third face button) *will* work on a 2000 4Runner with one exception - it will lock and unlock the vehicle and it will roll down the rear window. It will *not* roll the rear window back up no matter how long or short you hold the third button or what pattern you press the button in. As a general rule for car remotes, remotes with the same FCC ID will *generally* perform most if not all functions the same as each other and be cross compatible with other applications having the same FCC ID - I thought it was worth a try and the Avalon one worked well enough for me.

4. Assisting the lock up and down like so:

... did not work at all for me. Only using the key in the external door lock (which hits a switch every time you get to full lock or unlock travel) would get it into program mode.

Not going into programming mode

I have been looking forward to replacing my fob since I lost it and have to manually kill the factory alarm every time I get in the car. It's easy but an annoyance.
After much research, I found this forum for the alarm issue when it happened and it helped a lot, although I figured out the kill switch was broken on my own

I got your PM-- Here are the instructions for programming the 99-02 4Runner Keyless Entry factory remotes:

1. Start with the following conditions: you are in the vehicle

a. Key is out of the ignition
b. Drive door is open ( all other doors are closed)
c. Driver door is unlocked (other door locks don't matter)

2. Insert the key into the ignition (don't turn it) and pull it out.

3. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:

a. Cycle the power locks 5 times. Use an even pace and try
to go relatively fast.

b. Close, then open the drivers door.

4. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:

a. Cycle the power locks 5 times (same as before).
b. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF.
c. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF.
d. Remove the key from the ignition.

5. Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should cycle (automatically)
indicating successful entry into programming mode. Return to step 1
if the locks do not cycle at this point.

6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:

a. Press the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter
simultaneously for 1 second.

b. Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons,
press the lock button by itself and hold for 2 seconds.
Within 3 seconds, the door locks should cycle ( LOCK then
UNLOCK) once-- indicating successful programming. If
the door locks don't cycle, or cycle twice. Repeat steps
6a and 6b--this remote has not been accepted.

c. Repeat steps 6a and 6b for EACH transmitter that will
operate the vehicle. Including any old transmitters.

7. Close the driver door.

The first thing that I noticed was that my door locks don't go down all the way, so I read the manually help them thread and that works - for 1 mode.

I tried manually helping the lock go up and down again last night and it finally worked. I was able to get into the programming mode. Any of you guys who are having trouble getting into programming should try this. Can't wait for my fob to get here today or tomorrow!

For some reason the only mode that worked for me was the 5 off/ons = which I guess clears all the codes? This made sense when I was doing it -maybe it was full memory or something? However when I did the same scenario with 2 off/ons afterwards- it never goes to programming mode! WTH.
Since then I have reset the battery, charged the battery and tried several times to reset. Now every time I do this from door closed I have to reset the factory alarm if the light is on. Could this be the issue?

I"m about ready to go the a service or the dealer. Any ideas? I have already reset the battery and recharged the battery - using the instructions for a 2001 Toyota 4runner - programming mode will not activate! Only the 5 - clear all codes worked.

I also have an '01 and trying to program (using youtube video (which looks like the steps below) and the RS3200 VIP system, which are different) a key fob and cannot get it to work no matter what I do. I even had my wife do it since she's way smarter than me all to no avail.

I had a local dealer tell me the problem may be this: the ECU can only store 4 fob's worth of info so if you are trying to add a 5th fob, it will not work.

The dealer can clear the ECU and start anew but it'll be at least $150 to do that and who knows if it'll create other problems since I'm sure this is not a common problem.

I really want another fob but not sure if I'm willing to spend the money (and deal with the potential problems it may create).

Here's the ebay link that gives me hope that the FCC ID BAB237131-056 might work with my RS3000 on FCC ID BAB237131-022 (gray) on my 1998 4Runner.

I guess all I can do is try with one of the cheaper 056 versions since I am not wanting to spend $75 on this one that says it will work...

Key Fob Keyless Entry Remote for 1999 Toyota 4Runner

I bought a remote from here for my 4th gen and it worked perfectly.

After many tries final got it. First I didn't know I had a dead actuator so I ordered and installed the motor in the actuator. Then the drivers door motor was so week that it would not work after four cycles so tried the door slam method it did not work. Tried using the key to cycle the door the key would only turn one way but I amazingly had the key tag and had a new key cut at the dealer. Tried again using a instruction set I got online not 4runner.org. Don't remember where I got but was getting into the program mode. Gave one more try with 4runner.org instructions and finally got it. Yeaaa...

Bumping this thread to share my experience.


I've only had one FOB since I've owned this 4runner, and recently purchased a pair of FOBs off of Amazon. I've had to replace the FOB shell multiple times, but figured it was probably time to also have a spare. They had the same FCC numbers, so I was hopeful they'd work.


I never could get my 4runner to enter programming mode, no matter what I tried, so I took it to the dealer and asked them to program it. They were unsuccessful, but did charge me an hour for the labor. So thanks, I guess. They at least cut me some spare keys for free.


After reading the suggestion posted here to "help" the lock up and down while cycling the lock switch, I was finally able to get it into programming mode, and programmed both new amazon FOBs on the first try. They all work just as good as my original.


So anyone who can't get theirs to go into programming mode, definitely try helping the locks up and down while cycling. And thanks for the suggestion whoever posted it...

For what it's worth, I don't recommend purchasing "OEM Refurb" keys from NorthCoast Keyless. They're much more expensive than other sellers, and they seem to be offering the same thing (oem-ish electronics in a sub-par non-oem case).

I was able to program my fobs from NorthCoast just fine, but they've both crapped out after about 2 months. Tried replacing the battery and re-programming, no dice.

I tried these instructions on my 99 4 Runner at first without success. I finally gave up and went to the dealer. The dealer told me that they could not do it either because the actuators in the driver's door and the front passenger door were not working at 100 percent. They seem to work pretty good but, not when you click locks back and forth so much. They estimated about $200 to have new Actuators installed in the front doors. The actuators are the things that actually make the doors lock and unlock when you are using the arm rest lock/unlock controls. I told them I would think about it. When I got home, the actuators on the passenger door seemed okay. I followed the above instructions accept that I used my left hand to manually lock and unlock the door while I simultaneously pressed the lock and unlock controls on hte armrest with my right hand. It worked the first time.

Yes - saved me much trouble. Manual actuating while pressing works.

Just wanted to say thanks to all who contributed to this thread. Thought I would have to order new FOB after trying to program old one once and it would only lock.

Good tip on have to manually pull on door lock etc.

FOB works great now!

I have done EVERY combination I can think of. I never get into the program mode. I bet I have tried it 100 times and the locks never cycle. I guess at this point it's a pipe dream that I will ever have keyless entry on my 2000 4Runner. Oh well.....

After about the 150th time the freaking locks cycled... I got so tore up that I just froze. Now I can't get them to cycle again for nothing. Anyone in Middle Tennessee want to come do it for me? I've had it....
