I was just suggesting the notion that with a higher tire sidewall with the 16's you're probably less prone to scratching those really nice 18's while your off pavement as they are gunmetal coated too aren't they? It's like keeping your 16's for some good snow or off-road tires for those wheeling trips. You'll have an easier time too finding some good dirt/wheeling tires for the 16's too if you plan to use your truck in that way in the future. And if you scratch up the 16's, no worries.
You've got to be careful with the sidewall, too. That's a rating that's an absolute maximum, without considering the weight or size of the vehicle the tire is mounted on. You can't just read the sidewall and forget the sticker, or you'll probably be running too high. There's a happy medium in there somewhere.boston_kevin said:Thai - I would be careful with that door jam sticker... That got Ford into a lot of trouble a few years back. If you read the sidewall of the tire, it should state the recommended maximum pressure for that tire. You should never exceed that pressure, but you should also never be at highway speeds with a tire less than 30 psi.
Thai said:Personally, i would not even tough the sidewall ratings. Stick to Owner's Manual and door jam sticker.
boston_kevin said:that's exactly what cost Ford so much money and grief. They had on the doorsill to set the tires to 26 psi for the best ride. When the tires dropped to 24 with the weather/pressure changes, they became totally unsafe at highway speeds.
boston_kevin said:I think the best answer is somewhere in the middle. I would never run any tire at it's maximum rated pressure, but I tend to trust the tire manufactures more than the auto maker since the auto maker (Toyota in this case) uses multiple types/sizes/brands of tires for the same vehicle.
