Pros and cons of going to 285 size tires

Pros: Looks better, taller (guess that is a pro to some, con to others who might be short)
Con: Worse gas mileage, more expensive tires

I have wondered the same thing, specifically regarding on-road cornering and handling. I would think that using a 285 tire on a stock 17" 4R wheel (most are 7.5 inches wide, correct?) would make the 285 bulge out further from the wheel and it would have less sidewall stability. Any truth to that theory?

You will need wheel spacers or aftermarket UCA's to clear them; alternatively you can get aftermarket wheels but that's the most expensive.
I also had to extend my bumpstops because they were rubbing the fenders when I hit dips at high speeds.

Either way, this is why I have wheels on my list but that will have to wait because I will probably be ordering a Shrockworks bumper/winch next week or the following week. Just waiting to see one in person this weekend before I pull the trigger.
There are plenty of people who run 285's on stock wheels though, so it's not a huge problem.

Thats kind of a factor to me. I just like having the same size spare. I went up an inch from stock to 265/70/17 which some call a 32 but it actual measurements are 31.9 or 31.8 .... 32's to me. I love the 285 look but just don't need it . Plus having a wider tire is worse in snow which I have to deal and travel with alot. I would rather opt. for a nice looking aggressive AT like a BFG or a Nitto TG in my 265.70.17 size. On my last ford F150 I had 285.70.17's BFG's ....them were some pricey buggers .

I do not mind a small gas mileage drop, I just do not like the lost power without regearing. When I put on my BFG all terrain 265/70/17 tires I lost mileage and power. Not a huge amount of power just not as fun as before. Any time you put on a larger heavier tire it takes more power to spin it.

Yes, I would do it again,But when my m/t's need to be replaced they'll be replaced with 305/70-17's.Pro's taller sidewall better wheel protection when aired down,Cons there expensive-depends if you got a/t's or m/t's. They also wont 'fit in the spare tire carrier-Either strap it down on my roof rack or strapped down in the trunk.Might have to wait for my CBI bumper or get a tiregate. Gas economy isn't horribly bad.On road with m/t's there a little noisy ,But the ride is not any different than my stockers.Off road they perform well,Thats what they were designed for.:satan:skibama said:
