I will say this, I took the starter out of my 95 3.0 with the heads off, exhaust off, and all the junk out of the way, and it was still a bear. I dropped the A/C compressor just to get to the front starter bolt, even with everything out, you will not be able to see it. People do get the starter out with everything in the vehicle, but you have to put your work in.

Do some more starter searching, probably as popular as "blown head gasket" on this forum.

Good Luck

I pulled the starter when I replaced both motor mounts on our truck. It seemed easier accessing the bolts through the wheel well. Have numerous swivels, extensions, and socket variants handy. A rachet that bends is helpful, but a short one works well too. You might consider replacing the mount while in there since your going to half the work already.

I just replaced mine and from my experience it wasn't bad at all, about an hour in total including getting the part. You attack it from the tire side and underneath. First take off the rear bolt to the engine mount (the one that will get in the way of pulling it out). After that just unscrew the 2 bottles holding the starter in and the one that goes to the power cord and you should be able to worm it out. The key is just getting that engine mount bolt off and nothing else should need to be done.
