Question about 5vzfe and rear locker from Tacoma

I recently purchased a 5 speed 4wd 1997 4Runner SR5 with a bad 3.4 and found a rolled Auto 2003 Tacoma prerunner TRD 2wd with a 80k mile motor and a rear E locker.

Now both motors are the 5VZFE, but I noticed the 2003 Tacoma had coil packs on it, would I be able to convert it back to how my 97 4runner is? All I really need is the longblock but I want to make sure I can actually use this motor without too much trouble.

It also has the E locker, but the yard will only sell me the whole rear end/axle and not just the locker. Is this an easy swap into my 4runner? Can I just remove the locker and install it into my T4R or should I hold out and look for an actual 4runner one?

THanks!

Peter

your 97 has coil packs too... both motors will be exactly the same. as for the rear axle, the gearing might be different, and i know the spring perches will be different, as tacomas are leaf sprung and 4runners are coil sprung. but you can retrofit your stock 4runner housing to accommodate the elocker.

Tacoma axle is 8.4". It won't work unless you swap the whole axle.

Tacoma non lockers are 8.4

Tacoma e-locker is 8"

Tacoma e-locker will fit 4runner non-locking axle with a little cutting, welding, drilling and tapping.

no tacoma ever had an 8.4, all tacoma axles are the 8", both locking and non locking they are all the same. ring gears and pinions and bearing and seal, everything will swap from one to another in both 4runner and tacomas. the only difference is the housing itself on the Elocker equipped ones, it has the cut out for the actuator for the locker, and the trucks have the leaf spring perches and the runners have coil springs... other than that everything is the same the diff you call an 8.4 is this diff(see t100, and trundra 00-06, and tacoma) -its the later model tacos that are 4x2/pre-runners. Erik's Toyota Differential info

so it was pointed out to me by J-money$$$ that yeah tacoma axles are different, only the carrier barrings are the same, everything else is different in the. sorry if i have miss lead or miss informed any of you i will now proceed the lashings

There sure is a lot of mis-information on this thread.

The Tacoma (with the 3.4) without the elocker has the same diff as the t100, the tundra and later tacoma's. Technically it not 8.4" it is bigger carrier then the 4runners 8" diff.

You can not bolt a V6 tacoma diff into a 4runner housing with the exception of the e-locker diff.

This is from Erik's toyota differential info site:
All 2wd and 4wd T100's, '00-06 Tundra's, and ?? Sequoia's use a newer/stronger 8" 2-pinion diff. Tacoma 4x4's and Tacoma PreRunner's that don't come with the electric locker (aka "non-TRD), as well as V6 Tacoma 4x2's also came with this diff.
This diff commonly and mistakenly called an 8.4" or 8.25" diff, possibly to imply its extra strength. The ring gear actually measures 8". The extra strength of this diff comes from the bearing cap/truss and large diameter pinion gear shaft.
LSD's available is the TRD/Kazuma clutch-type 3-pinion LSD, the OEM 4-pinion Tundra TRD LSD, and the Detroit Trutrac.
Lockers available are the Powertrax "Lock-right," "No-Slip," ARB Air Locker, Detroit Softlocker.
This diff cannot be fitted to an older style 8" axle because it uses a larger diameter mounting bolt pattern and because more space inside the housing necessary to accommodate the large bearing cap. The different bolt pattern also makes it very impractical to swap in an electric locking Toyota diff (the whole mounting flange would have to be re-done using a special jig).

- Carrier bearing truss and newer housing adds significant strength over V6 and 4cyl diffs
- Uses V6 carrier bearings, larger pinion bearings
- Uses shims for backlash adjustment instead of threaded adjusters
- Twelve 12mm Ring gear bolts
- 10mm axle housing studs with 14mm nuts
- 30 splilne axles
- 30 spline pinion

* 4Runners do NOT use this diff at all. Late-model 4Runners still use the V6 8" diff above.

** This diff is NOT swappable with V6, 4cyl, high-pinion, or electric locking diffs. This diff cannot be fitted to an older style 8" axle because it uses a larger diameter mounting bolt pattern and because more space inside the housing necessary to accommodate the large bearing cap.

Thanks for the info guys. I ended up getting a package deal when I bought the motor and might be selling this rear end as I don't really need it right now.

I posted it in the classifieds, but haven't gotten any real bites. I'm probably asking way too much for it though.

Go ahead and install that locker in your 4runner. You know you want to do it.

Did you get the switch and the ecm from the Taco?

Thanks, I'll lower the price accordingly. As for the Supra, no new pics yet. I'll get some as soon as it comes out of the body shop :-)

I did get the button, but I didn't get the ECM for it. Would you happen to know where that is located on the Tacoma? I'll go back and grab it Tuesday.

Thanks,

Peter
