Question about backup camera

I'm trying to decide on a backup camera to use with my new Sony head unit on my 4th gen. I've searched the forum and I've about got information overload. I had decided on this one:https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HZM70NU/ref=ox_sc_act_title_5?smid=A2LTP4IRWNF1QK&psc=1 the Auto Vox one from Amazon, based on recommendations I found during my search on here as well as reviews on Amazon. But my question for anyone who has this one or one like it is, doesn't the camera itself get in the way of the latch for the rear hatch? The camera assy would be dead center at the top of the license tag which seems like it would prevent you from getting your fingers on the pad you open it with. Otherwise, if anyone has any recommendations for a good inexpensive one I'd love to hear it. Why not go with one of the types below? I do have one that screws to the license plate retainers but my rear latch is broken so haven't noticed if it would be in the way...lol. One way or another you'll have to make a hole unless you do wireless. That last one you list is kinda neat replacing a plate light. Keep us posted with what you end up with.

Thanks Mike, I like the looks of those you listed but I'm just not sure where I could mount those. I really would like to do the license plate frame one but I want to be able to open the hatch without problems. What made me think about it is I had bought a license plate frame that was about 3/4 inch thick and when I put it on there I couldn't open the hatch. I'll certainly update when I do something. Thanks for the response.

Why can't you just mount the one you want to the bottom of the plate instead of the top if it does interfere with opening the hatch?

Hey AuSeeker, I've actually thought about that. My concern with that is it looks like the bracket might cover up the month/year stickers on the tag. I might look into that a little closer. Thanks
 
I bought the Autovox Cam 6 license plate camera to use with my Sony XAV-AX5000 install. It is very close to the latch button, but I ended up bending the camera down so I could see my trailer hitch ball, which helped a lot with clearance. I have no problem opening the hatch at all, and so far the camera has been awesome. Very sharp picture, and works awesome at night as well, especially with the LED backup bulbs.

From the photos it looks like the bracket can be mounted/attached on the back of the tag or the front, with the bracket on the back only the tiny camera is on the tag's front.

For what it's worth, mounting anything on or around your license plate is illegal and is technically PC for a traffic stop. Yes that includes the ring your car wash gave you and your fraternity ring. It's rarely used unless you're in a garbage neighborhood. Of course if you're trolling around in these areas (you all know the ones) you get what you get.

As far as mounting goes, I mounted mine under the little plastic chrome lip where the latch handle is. Its out of the way and basically hidden. You'll have to drill a hole.

I want to thank everyone for their replies. I'm still not sure which way I'll go but now I feel a lot more knowledgeable about this. I'll update once I get it done. Thanks guys.
 
I have one similar to the first link you posted.
The camera mount goes behind the plate and the bracket holding the camera comes up and bends back down to hang over the top edge of the plate.
Never had an issue getting access to the hatch. You'll be fine.
 
Okay, just a partial update. I ended up going with the Natika camera on amazon. I haven't installed it yet thus the partial update. But, I'm really surprised, almost amazed at the apparent quality and customer care with this unit. The camera itself is metal and feels really solid and heavy. the wiring feels like quality as well. And in the box they included a tool to help with installation and a small roll of electrical tape. It just seems like you're dealing with a company that cares. I'll do a final update once I get it installed and try it out, hopefully later this week. This is the unit:

I've got the same Sony headunit and about to install a camera. Anything I should be aware of when hooking up a camera to that headunit (previous owner installed it)?

Not at all as far as I know. As soon as I plugged mine up it worked and has worked flawlessly since then.

Did you install it yourself? I am using the same one, can you provide any tips? How did you get the wiring through the lift gate grommet? It's impossible for me.
