Hey all, I'm a noob to this site but not the world of auto forums. I just recently purchased an 01 4runner sport and want to change a few things. I want to change the lights in the headlights so that they are more white or blue. Kinda like HID's. Can someone direct me to the specs on these lights and possibly where to go to buy them. That's as cheap as you'll find anywhere. Decent bulbs too. Here is the order of halogen bulb good-ness, the percent being how much more light you get than with a stock bulb:
+50%: Philips Vision Plus (achieves its extra performance by increased luminance, not lumens. See this article: http://www.eur.lighting.philips.com/press/automotive/resultsVision.shtml
+30%: Philips Premium, Osram Silverstar (European marked only - see note below)
+20%: Osram/Sylvania Xtra Vision, PIAA Xtreme Whites, Osram/Sylvania Silverstar (North american market only - see note below)
+0%: Philips Bluevison, Osram/Sylvania Cool Blue, Osram/Sylvania Halogen Plus, and OEM bulbs like GE.
-10%: PIAA Superwite
The European Silverstars have clear glass and the NA Silverstars have blue tinted glass. The blue tinting actually steals light output away from the bulb. The Philips Vision Plus bulbs are the best you can get for Halogen, and are available in Canada.
Try eBay for the better ones. If you just want an easy cheap upgrade, I'd say go to Pep Boys and get the Silverstars. 20% isn't bad anyway. Don't get the PIAA Superwhites, they are actually worse than your OEM bulbs. The PIAA Xtreme Whites aren't bad, about the same as Silverstars.

Definitly go with the Silverstars. They make all of the objects in front of you look like they do during the day---true color!
Also, being a cop, I have worked accidents where people wrecked because they were blinded by headlights that were TOO bright--one person who was blinded actually hit the person with the superbright bulbs! Just something to think about.

The 01 uses a 9003 light, the 93 uses a 9004 light. Both are standard lights, so you shouldn't have any problems finding one for your truck.

That's true, but unless the headlights aren't aimed correctly you won't have a problem. Even regular OEM bulbs can blind people if they are aimed too high. Just make sure that whatever you get is aimed correctly. If you don't know how to do it, take it to a dealer. They have special tools that attach to the front of the light to aim them perfectly. That's why most Xenon lights come from the factory with some type of auto aiming function. If you get blinded by those bad boys, you can't see anything.

Changing the lights shouldn't put them out of aim, because the entire housing moves and that's how you aim them. Just look in the back of the light in the hood and you should see where the plug attaches to the bulb. Unplug it and twist it to losen it, then just pull it out and switch the bulbs. After you're all done, wait until night and pull the truck about 10 feet away from the garage door and turn on the headlights. Check and see how high they're aimed and if they are too high then find the aiming screws and turn em down. It might also help to go driving on the street and just seeing if the light shines on anyone while you're out.

I tried going to pep boys by my house and they were $49.99 for the pair. I ended up going home, jumping on e-bay and buying them for $27 shipped. Should be here sometime next week. Can't wait to get them.
