Question about price

Hello 5th gen forum. I'm a 4th gen guy with an opportunity to purchase a 5th gen for my wife. My wife's aunt is upgrading to a 2016 Limited and is looking to sell hers. I'll post the info below:

2010 White on black limited 4X4
3rd row seats
1 owner maintained at the dealer
VG condition
92k

She is offering it to us at $23k. Judging from comparable vehicles on autotrader and the KBB value at $25k, this seems like a good buy. What are your opinions? We weren't looking to upgrade from our 2004 limited, but don't want to miss an opportunity on a good deal. TIA

good deal, book Private party sale right at $25k, $23k for trade in..... I'd work the "family discount" angle though haha

Or sell the MY04 for 5K and add 15K to the pile and buy new Like your Aunt.

Well that would get him 3/5 of the way to a new truck. He would need a few extra dollars to buy new, or be paying it off for the next 5 years.

Seems like your Aunt wants to sell to you, offer 21k.

Do you need the 3rd row seat?

Is the Limited package important for you?

The vehicle has close to 100k and it's a 2010. Every time you drive by a "face lifted" model you might have some regret. I say it's better to buy something newer with just an SR5 package and 4x4.

It sounds like she's offering to sell it to you for the same price the dealer would pay her. You'd pay more for the same vehicle in a private sale, you'd pay much more for the same vehicle at the dealer. You know the previous owner, and you know the service history. You have a 4th gen so you know these vehicles last forever. You don't seem to be the type of person who has to have the latest/greatest of everything.

If you like it, and (more importantly) your wife likes it, then it seems like the right price.

100k on the odo is nothing if it has been taken care of and you aren't gonna touch a NEW LE (or even an SR5) for $23k.

Question: Do you want it YES?------> BUY IT
NO?

Don't Buy It

If you want the limited, get the limited. Don't settle for anything less. The inside of the 2010 limited is nice and that's where you'll spend most of your time. You're not going to spend your time outside looking at the headlights the whole time.

You can always change out the exterior parts to make it look newer (if you really need to) but it'll be much harder to get the comfort and feel of the limited inside.

Seems like a good deal, especially since you know the history and owner.

If she sells it to you for what the dealer will give her then she's losing money, as she would not have to pay taxes on 23k of her new purchase price if she traded it in.

I'm a big fan of the blizzard pearl, it was just really hard to find when I bought mine.

If you can sell your '04 for $7-9k, then you're not looking at too much to get into that 2010.

Not second guessing you guys or anything, but would a dealer really give $23k for that car? I know KBB says they would, but often times kbb is pretty far off. We're going to talk about it and drive the car. I'll check back in.

It depends on the dealer and what type of price they negotiate on the new vehicle. If she's getting a really good deal on the new vehicle the dealer will likely low-ball the trade-in. And vice-versa... in the "deals" where they will pay "extra" for the trade-in that's requisite on paying a high price for the new vehicle.

If you really want to know, have your aunt start negotiating for the new car and get a quote for the trade-in separate from the new.

And blakjack23 is right... in most states the sales tax is reduced by the value of the trade-in. Sales tax on an extra $23k is a nice chunk to think about. :tsk:

In some states, you'll technically have to pay sales tax on the $23k twice. One because of the lost discount by your aunt, and again when you register it yourself. You'll have to research your specific state, though, because some states allow you a tax credit for selling a used car and others don't.

If you weren't actively looking to purchase a new car, this price isn't a drop everything and buy kind of price, IMO. But if you like it, the wife likes it and you want a car with a one owner who you can trust and know the history then it sounds like a fair deal.

So it turns out the car needs tires soon, and they want us to have the car since we are family. She offered the car to us at $21,000. I think we're going to get it now. Thanks for the input.

That's 1/2 the price of a new one and it will virtually do the same thing most likely with out any issues. Sounds like a no brainer.
