Question on '05 Sport Appearance

I have had a quite a few Toyotas from an '83 Hilux to mid '90's 4Runners and Hilux's to my 99 Tacoma and my '01 Tundra. I just can't get them out of my blood I guess...well back to my question. I am looking at picking up an '05 4Runner for the wife. I was under the understanding that all Sport Models had the scoop on the engine hood. I went to look at this particular '05 "Sport", but when I got there it didn't have one. Is this normal or did someone change the hood:shrug:

It doesn't sound normal to me. Even though mines an 06 sport, It came with the hood scoop. And it was my understanding that all sport editions came with the hood scoop. Did it have the sport edition baddging on the side of the vehicle? or was it just the limited or sr5 baddging?

I thought at first maybe '05 didn't have it. We looked at a '06 that had the scoop. Is there any other way to find out if it's a true "Sport"...ie special features only Sports have?

The '05 has a factory hood scoop, so the hood must have been changed if it doesn't have one and is actually a sport.

There are plenty of sports without the scoop. Does the current hood have the VIN # identification decals? You can also go to any Toyota dealer and ask the Used Car Sales manager to pull up the original dealer invoice which will show how the runner was ordered and with what accessories. If it had a scoop, it would be on there.

I saw 05 sports without a scoop, and spoiler during my hunt for the runner I have.

Never heard of a Sport coming without a hood. That was a part of the whole 'Sports' package. Rear spoiler would've been optional. Besides what the badging actually says you can identify a Sport quickly this way...

Limited will be loaded... Leather, power everything, more than likely have nav, etc.

SR5 will have 16" wheels, black mirrors, chrome door handles, chrome tailgate garnish

Sport will be like an SR5 interior with color differences. Mirrors will be painted, tail garnish painted

That's incorrect. ALL 4th gen Sport Editions came with a hood scoop, no exceptions. If you've seen an actual 4th gen Sport Edition without a scoop, it's because someone replaced the hood.

The SR5 for '05 had optional 17" wheels that were the same design as the Limited that year. In my area, just about every SR5 on the road has those optional 17" wheels. I don't think I've ever seen the 16" wheels on a 4th gen 4Runner other than in pictures on this forum. You are correct about the black (unpainted) mirrors on the SR5. The Sport Edition and Limited came with body-color (painted) mirrors. The SR5 for '05 did not come with chrome door handles or tailgate garnish.

To the original poster: Here's a sure-fire way to tell if you're looking at a Sport Edition or SR5. Check for the XREAS shocks. They have a hydraulic line going to them. XREAS was standard on the Sport and not available on the SR5 (and optional on the Limited, but I don't think you're looking at a Limited). It is possible that the XREAS shocks were removed, but you should still be able to see the hydraulic plumbing or if it was ever there in the first place.

The mirrors are another good indicator. Sport Editions and Limiteds came with body colored mirrors. SR5 had black plastic mirrors.

Sport Editions also came with silver painted center sections on the lower front and rear bumpers. The SR5 and Limited did not.

You can also check the wheels. All regular Sport Editions came with the same style 17" wheels from '03 through '09.

Another good way to tell is the seats. Sport Editions only come with cloth and I'm 99% sure that the cloth seat style in the Sport Edition was only available on the Sport Edition. Most Limiteds (if not all) will have leather, and the cloth in the SR5 was different than the cloth in the Sport Edition.

Of course many of these things could have been changed by the prior owner(s), so you might have to look at a few different things to determine if it's actually a Sport Edition or not. But the hoodscoop should be there for sure, no doubt about it.

EDIT: One other thing I forgot. The '05 Sport Edition had silver painted roof rack. The SR5 and the Limited had black roof racks.

When I bought my 4R.... I noticed a lot of dealers listing their SR5's as Sports (even though they weren't). I've never heard of a Sport without the scoop. When I shopped... I simply checked the pics to see if they had a scoop or not. Have fun shopping! :thumb3:

It's the 7th digit. The problem is that the SR5 and the Sport Edition have the same 7th digit. If I remember correctly, only the Limited has a different 7th digit.

I have an '04 Sport and the 7th digit is a 4. But like I said, the SR5 should also have a 4 as well.

As an owner of a 2005 Sport Edition, I concur with everything he says above. At a glance: wheels & hood scoop shoule be the clear indicator you are looking at a Sport Edition. Oh, and the guess the "Sport Edition" badging on the doors.

Did somebody mentioned x-reas? If it has one than it is sport (or limited with option). SR5 never had one (even optional).
But hood scoop, hm... I agree with those why say that it must be (the same as x-reas) on sport.

Thanks everyone for the help. I was able to look at it online again, the website was down yesterday. It has black (non painted) mirrors, black rails on top, and SR-5 rims. Although it does have the wing on the back, I guess that must have been an option. It looks like someone has debadged it at one point in time. She just posted it wrong, or maybe when she bought it they told her it was a sport.

It's funny that you mentioned seat colors. Early Sport Editions had a lighter color on the seat material. I looked at an '09 Sport a few weeks back and the the seats were the same pattern, but much darker in color. The '09 seats were almost black on the sides, where the earlier Sport seats were more of a charcoal grey.
