Questions about the FJ coil conversion and spacers

ARK_SWAMP_RIDER well I only have a v6 so that is why I was wandering if it was lighter and if I would have more height up front because of that. Yea I know it will be cheaper but I am limited on my mechanical abilities so any one in dfw area that wants to work for cold refreshments and is willing to help that would be great.

I was replying to the original poster. With the v6, 1/4" spacer for sure.

Thanks for the pic gaterose, that's what I've been searching for! I agree, the 1/4" looks better on your setup, and I think that'd be the best way to go for the v8 2wd. 1/2" spacer may be a little much.

I'm sure the 1/2 will work out just fine, look forward to seeing the progress. Not to add more confusion, but you may consider one of the 1/4" spacers to add to one side to correct the lean you have (that is what the 1/4" spacer is meant for).

Do you think the lean is from my gas tank being full at the time of measurements? (I'm not sure if that matters)

That will effect it some. If you have a chance to measure it with 1/4 tank or less I would. The driver, battery, and gas tank all are on the same side, so over time that side sags more than the passenger. Full tank or not, there's likely a difference, maybe just not as much.

I read on this page that "You cannot disconnect the XREAS hydraulic lines connected to the shocks at all. Once fluid leaks out and air enters in, the system needs to be entirely replaced. There is no way to flush or recharge the system." from this website:

2007 Toyota 4Runner Sport Edition Lift

If that is the case... how do I replace just the coils without touching the XREAS?

I ordered the 1/2" kit, hopefully it is here before Tuesday. That's my next off day and I want to do the install that day :-) Excited!!!!!
just check, recheck, recheck and check again that put the springs on the correct side. there is a difference. check the color codes to verify them BEFORE putting them on.

Glad you brought that up, there IS a difference between driver/passenger springs on the front. The difference isn't obvious, but one is longer to offset the weight of the gas tank (drivers side is longer). If you install them wrong, you'll have a bad lean. Unfortunately, I speak from experience here, I had to install mine twice to get it right.

XREAS is a closed system, there's no way to add fluid. What you read is partially right, once fluid is lost the whole system is trash. However, there are certain disconnect points, and as long as they are disconnected properly then there is no harm done to the XREAS system. The vehicle must be completely in the air with all four wheels bottomed out, then disconnect at the appropriate places. In the end, even though it can be done, I chose not to due to the risk involved.

You can rent a set of spring compressors for free at most automotive stores. You proceed with the install just as you would normally, and once the shock is free you leave the XREAS line attached. You can then proceed to do all the work there in the fenderwell. This makes you be a little more careful and is a little more time consuming, but very doable. Most shops I spoke with had bench mounted spring compressors and they couldn't do it this way. The ones I rented were portables that allowed me to work in the fenderwell. Most places I've seen that rent them have the portable sets (that's the only ones they had). Clear as mud?

My friend that I was going to get to help me install the lift in my drive way decided he wasnt all that sure he wanted to mess with it when he learned about the XREAS. He doesnt want to mess anything up and doesnt know enough about it to feel comfortable in doing it.

So after calling some friends of mine that work at 4WheelParts and asking them to do the install for me they told me I was trying to do a lift that couldn't be done without messing up the XREAS. They were confused as to what I was doing and were wondering why I wasnt just installing something like a daystar leveling kit. They told me they were going to do some research and get back to me.

Called the dealership and the service tech guy pretty much thought my idea was stupid and he was wondering why I was going about leveling my 4runner the way I was.

Now I have no idea what to do. When I first bought my 4runner I was just going to install a leveling kit, but now after reading about the FJ coil swap ya'll have me sold on that idea. I wish I knew someone here that has done this install before to help me. Anyone out there in the Austin area?

It's fairly common for shops to be clueless when it comes to these suspensions. I had several back out on me, that's when I finally did it myself (and glad I did btw). The install isn't that bad, and XREAS isn't as big of a deal as you'd think. The ONLY difference is that instead of laying the shock on a workbench to disassemble it and install the new coils, you must do this with the shock sitting on a crate or something with the line attached. The only difference it makes is where the work is done, it doesn't complicate the process. As I said, most shops use a bench mounted spring compressor so they can't do it this way, and they don't want to be liable if the XREAS is messed up by disconnecting the lines.

If you haven't yet, click the link in my sig to go to my writeup. In that post, I give links to several usefull install threads. I suggest you e-mail those links to whomever you're going to have install it. Hopefully you can find someone willing to help, if it wasn't 10 hours away I'd lend a hand.

Installing the coils is no different than installing the daystar spacers that 4WP sells, I don't understand why they wouldn't put them on.

XREAS Daystar Install

this thread shows pictures of the entire install, you can see they remove the upper coil isolator plate and install the daystar in its place. This is where you'd just pull the coil, put the FJ coil in its place and add the spacer on top.

If 4WP is willing to install this daystar (or OME) lift on a xreas runner, there's no reason for them to not install the FJ coils (other than not wanting to do it since you're not buying anything from them).

Try saving up a little more money and replace the XREAS to Bilstein shocks or 5100s. Tokico or Bilstein FJ shocks are better than XREAS IMHO.

I ripped that suspension out... glad that i did... made the biggest difference in the world for me.

are spacers necessary, why would you use them with the fj components?

To gain more lift. The FJ swap give you ~.5-1" depending on the vehicle, and ~1.5 is needed for a level stance. Therefore, many choose to add either a 1/4" or 1/2" spacer (you gain twice that amount in lift) to reach the 1.5" mark.

That's what i did. FJ + Spacers. with bilsteins. I wouldve done OME kit but i got all my parts for so much cheaper compared to going with OME route. (Plus i dont offroad so didnt need a full kit)

Ark glad you brought that up. I actually have something going on with mine that I havent heard of yet. I have the 1/2 spacer and full FJ swap, V8 4wd. My left front is almost 3/4 of an inch higher than the right front. This is after probably 1000 miles or more with the swap. Everything is set good as well. Thinking about taking the 1/2 out of left side and putting the 1/4 in. or adding 1/4 to the right side. I know they settle some but i thought after 1000+ miles that would take care of itself.

MSBX4RUNNER dont get to confused, you can always remove and change things.
