I just hit 90k miles on my 2006 4.7L 2UZ-FE and it is time for a timing belt change. I am having my friend, who is a Toyota Tech do it, but I am trying to familiarize myself with the process.
I went through the FSM's procedure, and have a couple of questions.
1. In the FSM, before removing the old Timing Belt, it says: "Using a SST, loosen the tension between the camshaft timing pulley (RH bank) and crankshaft timing pulley by turning the camshaft timing pulley (RH bank) counterclockwise slightly." I am assuming this is to release the tension on the VVTI system, so proper alignment can be made?
I talked to my Toyota Tech friend, and he said he has never had to do that step, which concerns me a little. For those who have done this job on a VVTI 2UZ-FE, I am curious on your opinions on if that step is necessary.
Here is the step I am talking about from the FSM:
2. There are 2 marks on the Head behind the Cam Gears, a "|" and a "T".
What is the difference between these marks?
