Quick extended warranty question

Can anyone confirm the cutoff date you have to buy an extended warranty?
I've heard conflicting information. I thought it was before the 2 year/24k original toyota care expired, but one dealer told me you had 3 years, and toyota finance said until 31k miles.

Also, toyota finance said that you could no longer buy the warranty from out of state dealers. I said I had a friend do this though and he said they no longer do this and discourage this practice. His answer sounded a little fishy and not a hard and fast No. I talked to the out of state dealer in the midwest thats often recommended here and he told me that dealers just arent allowed to solicit out of state, which they never do, but can still sell to out of state. Can anyone confirm theyve experienced similar?

Thanks for the help.

I don't have hard evidence, but I was told it was at 36k or 3 years from in-service. I bought my extended at time of purchase (used) at just shy of 3 years from original in service date and with 34k miles on the clock.

When I mentioned buying my 3/36k extended warranty elsewhere, my dealer said I "couldn't" but I replied that I'd certainly try it since their price was DOUBLE the listed mid-west dealer prices... Then they cut the warranty cost down closer to that price (I agreed then) and didn't mention it again. I'd recommend printing listed prices out and bringing it to your dealer and negotiating the price locally. I just showed them the price from a recent Tacoma forum on my phone. Of course, since I didn't buy my 4runner yet, my dealer was a little more apt to discuss pricing.

When I was doing research on this I found this post helpful:

Vehicle Service Agreement

I also found, I believe on Toyota's website, something that stated that it must be purchased with the first 30,000 miles.

Disregard the 30,000, that's for the Toyota Care Plus

As Tony stated above, when I made my final decison the dealership I purchased the vehicle through called me and provided me their price. I said no thanks I found something better. He asked how much better and he went $50 less with $0 deductible.

After searching through threads dated back to 2010, I contacted [email protected] and he was very helpful with an extended warranty quote. We haven't purchased yet for our 2014 but will seriously consider buying through him. Send him an email for a quote and have your questions answered.

Thanks for your help guys.

Talked to Jerry and he said the warranty can be purchased through 3 years of purchase and 36k miles.

If you want to extend your extra care maintenance plan then that has to be done by the 2 yr/25k date. The maintenance, which is the Toyota Care plus maintenance plan extends the defined maintenance interval work.

I'm going to wait a year on the warranty and probably buy an 8 year. My thought is that if you can wait I', basically move year 3 (if I were to buy it now) to the end to year 11 since obviously more is likely to go wrong in year 11 than in year 3.

For today I went with the 5 year 50k maintenance for 625 which extends the 2 year to 5 year for the 3 additional years.
Not sure if this was worth it, but from searching online a 30k service can cost close to 400 bucks. The majors through 55k are at 30k and 45k, then you have the shorter interval smaller checkups. I realize they are way overcharging for most of this stuff and a whole lot isnt necessary or actually done, but i think you have to do it to keep the warranty active anyway as opposed to if you wanted to change your oil yourself. So if I end up doing the service anyway, I'll feel better feeling like I'm saving a little money than paying hundreds every time they see if and have it be much more than the 625.

Here are current prices from Jerry for everyone's benefit.

Extended Warranties

For all Toyota and Lexus products you can purchase the extended warranty up to and just before the original factory warranty expires. The only thing may happen is by waiting that couple of years is the price of the warranty may increase in costs.

With my Toyota and Lexus products, I make it part of the deal when I purchase and I offer to pay what the online guys are charging. After the pricing for the new vehicle is established I say if you can match the online pricing for warranty I will buy this car. If not no deal. It has worked for my last four purchases. I paid $700 for 7/100 on my 4Runner and $1900 on my LS 460 for 8 Years/100,000. I do not go for the 125,000 mile as I do not keep the vehicle that long, and it costs a little more for the extra 25,000 miles.

Sure, I wouldn't own a Land Rover without a warranty / extended warranty.

But, consider how likely it is you will use the Toyota extended warranty.

My 2011 is still within 36 months of in-service, but it has over 50K miles. Other than the hazed headlights replacement, which was completed within the 36K miles, there has been NO warranty work done.....

At this point my truck is sufficiently modified that I don't think they would do any warranty work without a lot of hassle had I purchased the extended.

I would definitely wait until it was about to expire to decide if I wanted to buy the coverage.

Agreed. I purchased mine through Jerry last month for my 2014; 8 year, 100k for $1039. No issues, same warranty you would get from the dealership you purchased your vehicle from.

When I purchased my truck, I showed the dealer my quote from Jerry and their words exactly were, "buy that one..not sure how he does it, but that is less than our cost."

Not really sure what you mean by this. Purchasing an 8 year warranty is only extending your 3 year warranty an additional 5 years...in "year 11" you're on your own. You do have 3 years or 36k (whichever comes first) to purchase this warranty. The expiration date of an 8 year warranty will be exactly 8 years after the vehicle purchase date.

The only other benefit to purchasing the warranty now are the "fringe benefits" that come with a platinum warranty, ie: towing service, travel insurance, etc.

It's my understanding that whatever warranty you buy it's from your original purchase date.
i.e 8 YEAR 125,000 MILES $1,424.00 does not mean you add it onto your 3 year factory warranty, in actual fact the 8 year is really a 5 year or
125,000 whatever comes first

my 2011 has 56k trouble free miles on it.... I just sought out a dealer that gave me LIFETIME drivetrain. Not sure I would sink money into an extended warranty on a Toyota unless it was one of those God awful Prius Hybrids...

We don't usually buy extended warranties, which was a HUGE mistake on our previous Ford when the transmission went out in 3.5 years. We plan on buying an 8 year warranty on our '14 LE primarily because of all the electronics like the Navigation system, memory seats etc. Doubting the transmission would go out on this one but it could happen. $1,039 is worth it to me, but not at whatever awful price the dealer offered.

comparing Ford reliability to toyota is kinda silly. Further more, paying $1039 for an extended warranty is asinine!

Mmmkay, thank you for your invaluable opinion.
Comparing a Ford to a Toyota is rather silly.
I think it is fact more than my opinion. I would be willing to bet that if you compiled all the data on any two given vehicles from their line ups (excluding Prius) that toyota would come out on top 95% of the time with regards to reliability. I have owned both and enjoyed both (cars and trucks) so I am not just being a toyota fanboy. As for the extended warranty you paid too much just sayin;):

As with all insurance policies and extended warranties, it's a gamble. It's worth it, in my opinion, when so many repairs can cost over $1,000. Since I am new to Toyota, I would love to see this data to support your fact that I would be on the losing end of $1,000 for an 8 year warranty 95% of the time.

Extended Warranties

Yes, I have one. It is like any kind of insurance. You hope you do not need it.
I was at the dealer last week for scheduled service and an individual right behind me was talking to a service advisor. That had a few items wrong with their vehicle. One was the water pump needed replacing. I did not here what the other items where, but I did hear a repair quote of $594.00, but that it would be covered by their extended warranty. I have been lucky that I have had no major failures, but today repair costs are becoming quite pricey.

I agree, to me it's more piece of mind for me to have an extended warranty, sure you could stash away a couple hundred bucks a month and have a cushion if something did go wrong.
Me I'm not that good at stashing money away for "what if's" so I (me personally) I'm comfortable with purchasing a warranty.
If your opposite too me and can save, more power to you, I think $250 a year for a 8 year warranty is not too bad to me.
