Quick Help Please! How much for new key? Dealer screwing me?

The only thing is if and when you find your other key at the house it wont work because when the dealer resets the computer they wipe it clean and program the new key(s). I always tell people to get a minimum 2 keys when we reseed the computer just in case they lose the 1 cus then the whole process gets started all over. And yeah the cost of it sucks I try to help people whenever I can

I would have gotten 2 but they only had one key and they got that at the other dealership. The Service Manager said he would try to hook me up with another key when they get them in...

8 feet? If i was there, I'd have gotten them for you! Otherwise, I'm sure you could have found some kid itching to go treasure hunting for a $20 tip. Just like that game we used to play in the deep end with the weighted rings..

The bottom past that ramp is all soft mud and muck. No way your getting a single key in 8 feet that landed in silt and mud. We tried for an hour pulling up net-fulls of gunk, lol. Who knows where that thing fluttered down to.

I've seen keys lost in waist-deep water. The slight drift, color of the water, gone. 3 of us spent maybe an hour scouring a 10' radius.

I've always envied the keypads on my buddy's truck. His keys stay in the truck.
I must say though, I've had a vehicle broken in to while fishing before. It would be a bit nerve wracking to have my keys somewhere in my truck.

My lost-key anxiety has made me put the truck key on a quick disconnect, and the single key goes on a string around my neck while I fish. I've done this for about 20 years. I still remain paranoid about losing a key while waaayyy out in the whillywhacks

I lost a key ring once in about 20' of water at a marina. The biggest loss was my wedding ring was on the ring for "safe keeping".

Some Darwin Award winner died at that same lake the following year for the same reason. He lost his keys, so he tied weights to his belt, grabbed an open-ended garden hose for air, and dove in.

Lesson learned: always keep multiple spares available.

I program my own keys. Costs me about $30-60 for a blank, $2 to have my local hardware store cut the blank and I program it up.

There are two types of key for the Toyota immobilizer system. Master and valet. Any key you program that isn't a valet is a master key, so you can have more than one "master" key.

You need at least one master to program without dealer intervention (from what I've read), so I keep a master locked up in my safe. As far as me and anyone else know, that key doesn't exist unless I were to lose all of my other keys and need to program. It's never pulled out "just because"... ever.

I also have three other keys... mine and two "spares" that hang in the normal key spot in our cabinet. If the wife wants to drive the 4Runner she snags one of the spares. In order to need dealer service, we'd have to lose my keys + both spares + the one in the safe... pretty unlikely.

I also have a "door only" key (no transponder chip) I take with me when I don't want to take the whole key ring or risk losing the key. In that case, the actual key goes in the mini-safe I installed in the back of the 4R and I take the "door only" key with me.

If it's any consolation I've now spent over $400 on brake lines for my new toy that I ruined in an even less intelligent fashion than dropping keys in a lake.

.... I've been using my second remote key for the last 5 years. I lost that key last week- it's somewhere in the house.

It was in my toolbox.

Well- at least I got my house key back, and I didn't go buy another remote yet.




After the $700 reprogram :cry2:, this original key will lock/unlock and crank the truck but it won't start it. I can have this reprogrammed, right? Please tell me 'right"?!

Yeah you can reprogram the key easily now that you have working master keys. It'll just be an "add an additional key" vs. the "Reseed" you had to do.

Honestly, he might be able to do it himself... I don't recall if they still let you "manually" add keys without a scantool anymore... but some of the older stuff you would play with the door locks and such to make it work.

EZ Clone keys

I went to Lowes today to get a new key made on the EZ Clone machine.

They asked if my 05 SR5 has a regular ignition. Any idea what they are talking about?

BTW $75 to cut and reprogram the new key.

This thread has travelled many topical journeys. However, for what it's worth if you're looking to replace keys, I did the following.
1. Bought two new keys off of eBay for my 2011 for $35.95 shipped
2. Took all to the dealership and they cut and programmed both for $150

Up front they wouldn't guarantee they'd work, but they did.

Besides our 2013 SR5 we have a 2000 Tundra. It has an alarm system that works in conjuction with the lock/unlock of the doors with the fob. I don't know what kind of alarm system it is; but I don't think it has an imobilizer.

One Saturday I went to Sam's Club with a big list. I got out of the Tundra and locked it with the fob as usual. I come out with big cart full of stuff and hit the unlock button and nothing happens. No unlock, no click, no chirp, nothing. So I unlock the door with the key and as soon as I open the door the alarm goes off.

Normally people ignore car alarms. That is unless you happen to be standing there with the door open. So I figured I'd just get in and start the truck. Worst case I drive home followed by the cops. Turns out that starting the truck deactivates the alarm. Perhaps the 4Runner works the same way - if you have a key of some sort.

Lost a remote key my first long trip after getting the truck. Talked with parts department for replacements, was $150ea for the wireless remote key, $50ea for a regular key. That did not include the $100 programming charge since they are transponder keys. Although they were nice enough to say that they could program any number of keys I wanted at once with only one fee, provided they were done at the same time. Though I did have a key for them to copy, so I imagine starting from scratch is much more expensive, but only slightly more hassle for them.

Dad always taught me that either 2 different people have different keys in different places. Or you leave the one key you have hidden somewhere on the vehicle in the parking lot so that you can't lose it.
I've gone to keeping a spare set of keys in the back of the glove box of the boat, behind the flare gun so there's no chance to accidentally throw them in the water. There's also an emergency key hidden somewhere on the exterior of the truck I can get to with just a pocket knife.
You've also proven that an old popper isn't enough flotation for a set of keys. Maybe keep the house keys in the truck and only take the truck key with you on the boat? Or get a better float.
