Quick timing belt question with PICS

i will try to keep this short and sweet. i am reusing a timing belt with less than 3,000 miles on it. the original markings are all missing. when i removed the belt from the old motor i used a paint marker to mark the belt on the cam gears. the mark for the crankshaft gear is still there so i used that as my reference marking. but now the lines i made don't line up 100% i wanted to see what you guys think about it. i believe it should be fine

Make sure the crank is lined up correctly, the marks on the belt can be helpful but are there only as a reference.

Cams look good.

I'm confused. I thought you said you were a Toyota Mechanic?

the reason these cylinder heads are not meant to be rebuilt has to do with the valve seats. you cant get oversized ones or something i forget exactly what they told me when i was looking into doing it.

my two cents. get a new motor and then you have a million extra motor parts.

its just not worth rebuilding these motors unless you are in the middle of the amazon jungle and have no other option

im not sure about your "friends" credentials but i am an actual toyota mechanic and this motor isn't exactly user friendly.

i wish you luck.

It just seems like an "Actual Toyota Mechanic" would know the answer to this question.

X3, You're fine---- the important thing is the cams and crank line up.

Maybe the pic is at a bad angle but the drivers side cam looks off by one cog.

So LC touched on the crank position but just be sure the dot is in the 12 o'clock position.

the cams and crank are aligned perfectly I'm not worried about that i was more worried about the belt

Then pull the pin and drive on.

still need to do the valve covers before i can put the motor into the truck. got a lot of work ahead of me but I'm on the home stretch.

Don't bother. Engine timing (cam and ignition) is Auto Mechanics 101.

I agree. If everything was timed right when you took it off, those marks should go back on exactly like they came off. If they don't something isn't right.

i am leaving them as they are. the pictures are making it look like they are off but indeed they are not. the whole point of this post was in regards to the markings that are suppose to be on the belt not the timing marks for the gears

I get that, and those marks should have lined up. If they didn't, you're off a tooth somewhere, and when the tensioner does its job it's not going to be right.

If the marks lined up the first time, there HAS to be a reason why they're not lining up now.

would ask such a basic, and simple question.

The bad and incorrect info you gave about being unable to repair cylinder heads, (the thread where that quote came from) speaks volumes too.

Whether you like it or not, I will point out bad or incorrect info that could mislead members.
