Engine envy?

This thread started out about engine noise but has strayed. I don't dread this topic and no envy here. Like was said, both are good and both are in T4Rs. The V8 is too much for what I need. Heck, I even waited a year to get the T4R just to get the 4th Gen and V6. In hindsight, I'm glad I did because I wasn't keen on the grey cladding (not that it would have stopped me from purchasing.) I would have gotten the T4R even if they only had the V8. Engine noise didn't even occur to me to be something to consider on the test drive because the vehicle is so quiet either way. Luckily they gave me the option...

Fascinating that you bring this up, because it seems like V8 owners are always the ones trying to prove how good their choice was... Kinda gets back to the old primate thinking "mine is bigger than yours"... Envy from the V6 owners or attempts to justify a purchase for V8 owners... The jury is still out, but since most V8 vs V6 threads are started by V8 owners...

I don't dread the topic, but the horse has been beaten to death and the bones are turning to dust... Honestly both engines are fantastic engines, both are quieter than any other competitor (especially from the cabin) and so far both have a proven track record (V8 is a longer record) of reliability and performance.

as a V6 owner, I can tell you this from my experience...this engine is awesome! So much power and top end...I have never driven such a strong V6. I've had several SUV's with V6's and they dont even compare. I sure would like to drive a V8 T4R though to see what that is like.

Hm.... I didn't drive the V8 before purchasing my V6. My uncle has a V8, and it does seem a little quieter, but didn't really notice it until I read this thread (he has a 2003 V8, so don't know about the newer ones). Anyway, this always seems to happen when a similar vehicle has two different engine offerings. We also had this discussion when I bought my Audi (I bought the 1.8T 4 cylinder, rather than the 3.0 V6). I was really happy with my decision then (it was enough power (definitely louder), and the fact that I could modify it and it would beat out the V6 with better gas mileage anyday!) and am also happy with my V6 4Runner. If I were to go back, I would make the same decision. I don't have to tow anything, it has great power, and decent gas mileage (the 2-3 miles/gallon less + extra expense for the engine wasn't worth it to me for my use).

As far as quietness, maybe the V8 is a little quieter, but the V6 isn't loud, so it's really not an issue.

All of that to say that I truly like my 4Runner!!!

I dread these kind of thread too...and i own a V8...well, a different V8, but a V8 nonetheless! I don't like these kind of threads because it creates division in the forum...you put a barrier between the V6 and V8 owners for no reason since both sides are 4runner owners. The same thing occurs on Mercedes G forums...one group is old G owners and is still piss that Mercedes is now importing G's for half the price ($70K vs. $140K before 2002) while the other group bought it after 2002.

not a division but a competition. no one said your runner sucks, we're all enthusiasts on the board. 3rd gen to fourth gen rivals, still no division other than the maintenece and accessories are diff thus a forum split the 2. still an enthusiast either way. I personally do not like the fourth gens body style, still its a runner and i lilke them when on the trail!
Some people must have a V8 whether they admire the power and capabilites, lifestyle requires one, or your just compensating for something else! (as mentioned above)

My point of view, both engines are good. V8 is slightly quieter then V6, but to feel it I had to put both V6 and V8 trucks side by side and turning on and off engines one by one.
I'm very happy with my V6; no complain on the engine noise even with K&N Performance Intake. Just my 2c.

Silver for me. It looks awesome freshly waxed and at night. It relflects the ambient light very nicely at twilight. Compliments any chrome parts or silver rims you may have. The color just screams "machine" to me. That and nicely dressed tires. It's a great color for hiding dirt too and adds 10 HP to my V6.

It does give you some extra hp (I think it was 12hp when I dynoed the truck last summer) along with nice engine sound. I also got some improvement on my gas mileage, but with the sound and performance I gained, I started to push it a little bit further, so no gas mileage improving after. Meanwhile if I'm holding myself to normal driving my mileage is less then was before the kit.

I wanted a V8 because I've never had one and am so tired of underpowered anemic vehicles that I just wanted 8 cylinders under the hood...

Didn't you do your homework research before you bought? In hindsight, wouldn't you rather have an overpowered 6?

I have never had an issue of underpowering with my V6. May be it's just me, but I didn't buy 4Runner for 1/4 mile racing or highway speeding over 100mph. My cruising speed on the highway is 70mph and it's enough for me even with 33" tires.

The same blanket statement could be made about the V8s... I want a more refined V6 (technologically speaking) because I was tired of the "older technology smog pot" V8 (although I don't truly believe this).

I don't think anyone here cares why any one individual got the V8 vs the V6, because its a personal decision based on your individual needs (the reason I got a 4runner vs something smaller). I think what sets people off (and me included) is that the V6 vs the V8 always seems to end up in a competition thing and instead of touting the strengths of each platform it turns into a bashing.

After driving V8's nearly all my life (and I still own 2 - '00 GMC Yukon and a '68 GT500KR), I chose the V6 because of the technology, the potential, and the economy/emissions (yes, to me the additional 3-5 mpg is worth it) but I don't need to broadcast this to prove one is better than the other. Besides that, once my neighbor challenged me about his economical V6 minivan vs my gas guzzling 4Runner... Turns out I got the same gas mileage and he was only FWD. What really burned his chops was when I had to pull him out of a snowbank last year when his FWD minivan missed the turn. My 4Runner does everything I need it to do and more, and I feel I've just begun to tap the potential of this platform.

There is a good reason for why this topic stirs up such emotion. It is simple envy. Don't be jealous because your neighbor has something nicer then you do. Do the best you can, and stay within your financial budget.

Lexus uses the V8 because it is a luxury engine, costs more money, and is more expensive then a V6. So if you get it on the 4Runner it costs more money, but you get a better towing hitch, oil and transmission cooler, better spark plugs, and I believe all the differential oils and transmission oil is synthetic. You don't get this on the V6.

Because the gas mileage between the two is fairly close in relation to each other, over the course of a year no big gas savings will be had. Maybe I will need the extra power maybe I will not. The constant 4wheel drive, smoothness, torque, and refinement of the V8 is a luxury in itself.

The V6 has adequate power, is noisy compared to the V8 and lacks the extra grunt on steep grades. In most normal driving situations the V6 is just fine. Plus oil changes are more pleasant then the V8.

When everything is said and done all else on the 4Runner is identical. You can even put the V6 in 4wheel drive and leave it there. I will be de-badging my 4Runner and removing the V8 thing if it is removable.

So as a gesture of good faith, anybody still suffering from engine envy can have the stupid V8 symbol. I don't know why they even have to attach it. Makes me think about Ford commercials where rednecks dream about roadkill.

The jury is still out because of its relatively young age, but the 1GR-FE has the potential to become recognized as one of the best engines Toyota ever produced. There is plenty of fantastic engineering that went into its modern design.

Toyota has shown a lot of confidence in this engine by placing it in many important vehicles (trucks & SUVs) around the world where durability and reliability are paramount. In addition, the destroked 3.5L version of the design (2GR-FE) is the premium engine in the Camry, RAV4, and maybe soon the Highlander and Sienna. The twin-injected 2GR-FSE version of this engine powers the hot new Lexus IS 350. My bet is that this engine family will soon be regarded as among Toyota's best, otherwise they wouldn't be using it so extensively.

I will concede that the V8 already holds this distinction.
