Factory Radio problem

My wife's 2000 4runner w/ a factory head unit has started putting on a light show. At night, when you can actually see the illumination of the radio lights, they blink uncontrollably. The radio itself works fine, i.e. sound, volume, changing channels and so on. Just the lights themselves blink a lot. However, sometimes the lights stay on and don't blink. Other times they don't come on at all. Could it be a loose wire or something? Anyone else experience this?

Thought about fixing it myself or at least attempting to, so how easy is it to get to the back of the radio? Does the dash around the radio have to come off first then the radio will slide out or what?

I found the above^ in the archives, but there was no good solution. My 2010 4runner is having the same issue the display blinks, but the radio is working fine.:shrug: Any ideas out there? Anyone else experiencing this problem.

I'm not sure on this radio but my Honda had a separate wire controlling the brightness from the dash controls. If that wire was loose you could get flashing. Otherwise it's a short inside the unit itself and nearly impossible to self repair. Plenty of people have pulled the dash apart. Search for aftermarket radio install or something similar.

Seems too coincidental to be just that so I'll ask... What other type of electrical work has been done to these 'two vehicles' e.g., fog lights, dual batteries, winch, C.B. radio, audio system upgrading etc...

If the two head units were exactly the same e.g., same model, same year, and both built by the same manufacturer (Panasonic, Nippon-denso... ), then we would likely consider that to be a valid common denominator; and a 'possible' cause. But a blinking radio back-light display is really quite rare (in and of itself), and to have had two in one household, then you still need to consider the one common denominator; the user or user 'add-ons'. So tell us what (if anything) has been done to these two vehicles, regards!
