Rallypoint_1's 1998 SR5 2WD

Wow - what a beautiful truck!

I've been wondering how many common maintenance items (LBJ and other suspension parts, front end bushings, timing belt, radiator, etc.) are affected as much by age as they are by mileage. Your truck is the perfect time warp specimen to find out, and you are in the same fairly hot, somewhat smoggy environment as I am.

So - how do the bushings look? Do you plan to have the water pump/timing belt changed because the truck is 19 years old or wait for 100K miles? Do you plan to change the LBJs for safety sake? (and a related question - are failing LBJs a 4wd thing only?) Coolant change and radiator?

Lastly, if you decide to change out the seats and/or the wheels (15's are not all that common and my tires are nearly new) will you give me a shot at buying the old ones from you?

Thank you sir!!

I am sure time affects the belts, bushings, water pump....these would have to be changed soon being in SoCal. No rust issues here. In fact, I just replaced the front rotors and pads. They were warped because the steering wheel would shake when braking. When coming to a crawl stop you could feel it pulsate. So, now it stops so smooth!!!! Ha ha, I plan on keeping the seats and wheels but if I do change my mind I will keep you in mind.

Here are a few pics of the driver side suspension.

I see the air conditioner was a $980 option. I have never seen a 3rd gen without an air conditioner.

Did any come that way?

Not sure if they all came with AC and then dealer marked them up. My '90 Civic didn't come with ac and it was a dealer installed option.

I originally came here to say that a supercharger and long-travel setup on this would be amazing......

.....but when I saw how pristine and well-kept you and your folks kept it I think not. Too pretty to thrash in the desert! Good luck on the build and great truck!

Thanks for the kind words!!
A SC and long travel would def be a cool option but just a small lift and bigger tires is what I need. Even with that my dad would probably flip!lol But, he did mention bigger tires would look good.:high5:

UPADATE:

Front:
OME 880
1/4" front spacers

Rear:
OME 906

I decided to go with a small 2" lift. The 880's and spacers are new from Toytec. The 906's are slightly used from 1da4(David)...Thanks!! I had a lot of great advice from all and decided on the above. I think from the research I have done it should be the best for my truck. Now to find some time to install them. Wish me luck!!!

Well today was the day!!

After!!

Front measured 20" now 22.5"

Rear measured 20.25 now 22.75

Using the 1/4" spacer with the 880 coil helped give a little bump.

I love it!! Rides really smooth. I rear that the rear would be stiff but it really has a stock feeling to me. Comfy!! Now to get new tires!!

I too have a 2wd as a DD, 2001 with 62,000 and enjoy it very much, I try to keep mine as close to "Stock" as possible.

Received my brackets for the D Rings!!

A little paint

On!!

A little zip tie for stickie fingers.lol

Thought it was going to bang around when driving but nothing. I am sure if I go off road they might clank around.

I finally got new tires!!!

I went with 31" BFG ko2's The tires ride smooth with almost no noise! They are C rated so that's probably why. I am real happy with these! Can finally make it to some trails now.

Waiting patiently

On!!

Home

Drive way has an incline but rear is higher than front

Now let's see how much more gas I will use going from 225 75-15 to these. I can tell it takes a little more to move them but who cares. Wife asked if I was going to keep the running boards...trick question. I said ya but let's see for how long.lol

It's been a while since I posted because of that damn Photobucket.

I did a "satoshi-ish" mod last year. I think I came out ok.

Thank you!! It took many hours to make it. At least for me it did. I can see why they are pricey when pre-made.

I got the mesh from custom car grills.com The mesh is real sturdy not flimsy.

So I wanted to add a little more "rake" so I added two 10mm OME spacers per side. But I needed longer shocks so went with the Tundra 5100's.

So, now that I am feeling better I hope to do some more fun stuff to my truck!!

Today I was able to do a 1.5" body lift. I am not going to lie, It took a lot out of me. Only because I hit some bumps along the way. That rag joint is a PITA!! But it's done and seems like it's ok.

The only thing that I don't care is that the steering is stiff. The spacer is there. It doesn't want to return to center after a turn. Do you guys/gals think the slip yoke(bolt above the rag joint) needs to be adjusted??

Also need a bracket to get the bumper back to norm. I will get that little later.

I replaced the starter contacts and plunger a few months back. Truck would not start at times. Battery was new, alternator was working so I figuered it was that.

Got a $10 eBay kit. Watched MTBTIM's vid on replacement. Thanks!!

Very nice build and what a blank canvas your dad's car was. Amazing "find".

Seeing the Diamondback BMX above (That puppy looks light!), I realize now my passion for 4runners started with my Redline back in early 80s;)
