Random Ground Wire?

so I just recently purchased my first 4runner since I was a child (when my parents had one) I got a 1999 SR5 4wd. Nothing too nice or fancy just a toy / dog hauler / mud slinger. It's got 250k miles on it but overall it's in pretty decent shape.

It's throwing some ECU codes and I've been doing a lot of research on this forum figuring out what the issues are. I'm going through the steps to get it tuned up.

I replaced the Engine Coolant Temp Sensor First. Then I got belts and the A/F Sensor as well as new plugs.

I was changing the belts today and came across a rather large gauge wire with tape on the end of it. I took the tape off and it looks like a massive ground wire. Just hanging out, sticking out of the harness attached to the frame at the bottom of the truck.

I have literally no idea WHY it's there or what it goes to. I was hoping you all might be able to help. I've attached a pic. I looked hard to determine if i could tell what it was originally hooked up to but I found nothing.

I just taped it back up for now. But hopefully someone can help me figure out what thus goes to?

First I'd get an ohm meter and verify it's a ground, and likely it is.
It's probably the one that goes from body to frame.
There's a third that goes from frame to engine.

That sure looks like a factory battery to engine ground cable, especially if it ducks inside the split loom and heads up toward the battery. Here's betting someone replaced it with another and didn't bother cutting out the old one. Bet you find the other end loose up near the battery somewhere.

I can't help with th OP but I recently lost the ground wire bolt coming off the battery in my '98 3RZ. it was bolted to the body next the the battery. Anyone know the thread size?

On v6 it's a 10mm head and I believe 6mm x1.25 thread. I dont think its 1.0

14mm head and 10mm x1.25. However, is fairly short. I send a photo of the OEM bolt later.

It’s a very short bolt from factory. Not a lot of thread engagement. I found one in my parts bin that was same size but a couple mm longer. I believe it was a rear shock lower mount bolt if you have one around. Fit nicely.

Ace Hardware or another similar local place will have it. Just pull another 14 mm head bolt and match the thread pitch at the store, then get the shortest one they've got plus a couple of thick washers for insurance. Done.

Let me get back to you tonight on that.. I should be able to find the original part number for that Engine bolt for the ground.

The one for the body ground is just like 90% of the other 10mm bolts on the rig and fenders. I should be able to find that as well.

Wow this is amazing. I could not find this diagram anywhere on the web. Thank you so much. I live overseas and had a local mechanic work on my 4runner after an accident and he had to remove the engine but I found things missing when he complete all the repairs. I really appreciate all the responses and for coming up with the part number.

I would have a Toyota dealer verify those parts as sometimes these diagrams are as clear as mud. Glad to help and teach folks how to find the what they need. :]
