Rare 4runners?

So I was talking with my IT guy today and he was telling me about a guy he does side work for that has a 4runner, unsure what year, that came from the factory with a Lexus V8. He said it was an early production runner again not sure what gen, and there were only a small number of them made. Anyone ever heard of such a creature?

It also got me thinking what other rare runner are out there?

Somebody is telling somebody stories. Toyota never put a 1UZ in a 4Runner (though lots of owners have done that swap). Maybe he's thinking of the 4th gen 2UZ V8, but that's super common and not a "Lexus" V8 and there certainly weren't limited numbers of them made.

Rare 4Runners - Turbo 1st gens in '86 and '87, two door 2nd gens, there's a "Sequoia" trim for the 2nd gen you don't see very often, the 3rd gen has the Highlander trim/package that I suppose is sorta rare but not super rare. The 4th gen has a Trail Edition that was one year only. Four cylinder 5th gens appear to be pretty hard to find.
 
4Runner "highlander" edition, 2 door 2nd gen, and the turbos.

Aren't some of the Canadian diesels on that list, too?
 
I would add the Imperial Jade Mica (i.e. Dark Green) 4th gens. Only made for one year (2003) and by FAR my favorite color.

I almost wrecked the first time I saw one. I had no idea they ever made an IJM 4th gen. I think I've seen 2 in the last couple of years.
 
I'm pretty sure he's just talking about the 4th gen 4runner that shared the same Toyota V8 as the Lexus GX470 and obviously theyre not rare, plenty on here.

3rd gen had a "chrome package" that came with chrome mirrors and door handles as well as one-off wheels, never seen one of those in person. I've also seen pictures of both the 4th and 5th gens with a 2TR 4 Cylinder sitting under the hood from the factory. The 2 Door 2nd gen is my favorite oddball though.
 
The rarest of the rare is the '88 with the 22RE/W56 combo in white with OEM rims still on it. It also has the extremely rare 'enlarged' wheelwells to accommodate 33" tires WITHOUT a lift. One of one!!! Bidding starts at $25K.

Still a converted pickup, not a 4runner. And I doubt that the Trekker had anything to do with the 4runner being introduced. IIRC the Trekker was made in the US exclusively and given the long development time for most new vehicles, the 4runner was likely on the drawing board long before the Trekker.

The Trekker also was not the first time somebody put a fiberglass cap on a pickup and then cut the wall behind the cab to turn the pickup into what we now call an SUV (I don't remember hearing the term "SUV" until well into the 1980's.) Back in the 70's there were companies that would do the same thing to full sized trucks.

There was also a similar Nissan version of the same thing but I can't remember what it was called. What was interesting about the Nissan was that it used the King cab version of the pickup.

The Trekker is an interesting vehicle, for sure, but it's not a 4runner.
 
Isn't the 1st gen pretty damn close to the Trekker? I mean they pretty just took Toyota Truck and put a cap on the back as the first 4Runner.
