Isn't the 1st gen pretty damn close to the Trekker? I mean they pretty just took Toyota Truck and put a cap on the back as the first 4Runner.
Nope, not even close. Totally different body style.
The Trekker used the body of the 1st gen of Toyota 4x4 trucks, the ones that were made from 1979 to 1983. The 4runner came out in 84 and has the more squared off, boxy "1980's" style body.
Not sure exactly when the Trekkers were made, I remember seeing them in 1983 and I think that may have been the first year. I think they were made by a specialty body company in the US and sold by Toyota dealers. They were NOT a Toyota design.
This wasn't a terribly uncommon practice then. There were also double-cab Toyota pickups in the 1980s and they did the same thing: A base model truck was delivered to a specialty body shop and they would cut the frame behind the cab, extend it a couple of feet, cut the back of the cab off and attach a rather ugly fiberglass body to the back of it and then put the whole thing back together. There were no doors in the extended cab portion so the only way to get passengers in the rear seat was for them to climb around the front seats like in a 2 door car. I'll see if I can find some pictures of these. All the ones I remember seeing were the 1984 - 89 Hilux body style.
