Rattling Noise

Hi Guys,
The wife and myself came back from some shopping around and I was parking our 10 LE, when we started hearing a rattling sound coming from under the truck, somewhat from in the back of it. it was then when the truck was moving in Drive or reverse. I am trying to figure out what it could possibly be. my first gut instinct is the heat shield could have come loose, but any other thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. I would like to try and fix it myself rather than pay the dealership to do so! There is no noise when the truck is in Park. Thank You.

I'm just going to throw this out to check and it's easy:

Check your spare tire holder chain and make sure it's not hanging low and banging around.

I pulled my spare down last weekend to clean it and check the pressure and the chain is definitely something I could see making some noise if its not right.

I lightly zip-tied mine through the holes of the spare rim to keep it from flopping around.

Okay. I have a 2015 so might be diff, but my chain has a huge amount of slack hanging down. Like 5" up and down/doubled up as you look at it.

That being said - when I have one of these annoying things going on with vehicles I go through a checklist. You have already started that by saying it seems to only happen when in gear.

So... I would look for something around the drive-train as you stated. Heat shield, etc... And you definitely mean "rattling" vs a systematic clicking right?

Okay, I would definitely look first around the drive-train then. You know how all the sounds sort of change when you go from park or neutral to drive or reverse? The sound from the motor becomes more bass-like?

Do you trust your wife a lot.

If you do, you could make sure 1) The park brake is on 2) Her foot is firmly on the brake and then 3) You could stick your head under there and probably hear it when she goes into gear.

I will stress #1 & 2 and would not do that unless you are certain something crazy is not going to happen.
