Re-gear question

I have a 98 base model 3rz and planning on getting 33" tires soon. I know most of you did not re-gear for 33" tires but as far as i know the base model has a lower gearing than other models. whats the ideal gearing for my truck?

You're going to get different responses from everyone.

My brother has the 2.7 in his Tacoma, and is running 4.88s. He switches from 33s for normal driving, to 35s for crawling. While it doesn't like to go up long hills at highway speed with the 35s, she still moves just fine.

Look into lockers while you're at it. Gonna have it all apart anyway, minus well do it all at one time.

I'd recommed going to 4.56's on 33's, I just put 35's on my 2.7 5 speed and went with 4.88's, drives just like stock.

Are you going 285/75 or 255/85? I wouldn't think it would be worth the money to regear for 33s. 35s 5.29

My advice:

Don't re-gear if you are only going to run 33's. Deal with the ass pain of less power for now. If you re-gear now and then decide later on that you want to go to a larger tire you will of wasted a lot of time and money on those gears.

As far as 35s and 5.29.... Don't do it unless it's a trail only rig. Yeah, I have 35's and 5.29s but again I don't DD it. I use it to drive to the trail, pull out Jeeps, wheel and drive home. 5.29s with 35s will put your RPMs in the stupid range when at highway speeds. 4.88's would probably be better if you really want 35s.

I don't understand why so many on this site are against re-gearing.

running with larger tires, and the correct gearing is AWESOME. the engine, and transmission are better off when they are working AS designed.

as far as 5.29/35's. that all depends on the engine/transmission you have. with my 22re its PERFECT. it puts the engine back to just about stock.

hes running a 4cyl, it wont have near the pull your 3.4 has.
5.29s/35's would probably be just about right.

marcel, if you want to run 33's, I think re-gearing it is an excellent idea. as you can see, most people don't think that way. which, I think is silly. spend all the money to mod the truck, only to hinder it with retarded high gearing, and heavy tires...

I don't know what your stock gearing is, but if you are running an auto, you'll want to go just slightly lower, id expect 4.88's would be good for the 33's, but you could probably get away with 4.56's.

You're going to get a lot of opinions on this one. My opinion is 4.88 and put a dang locker in there while you're at it!

This chart will help the OP decide:

I am certainly not against re-gear so don't group me in with those martians. I am just try to get the OP to be smart about re-gearing and not waste money if he is going to increase tire size later on. I guess I didn't explain that very well. My fault.

cool chart.

I understood what you were saying, and I wasn't necessarily calling you out for doing that. I just see it a LOT on here, and used your post to address it.
