Real Mileage & price on 4Runner

I baby my 4runner and with the V8 I can get a little over 18 in the city and 22 hwy if kept under 70 mph

Generally 16-17 mpg around town, 21-22 highway, both are 2WD mode. That's measured mileage, not the trip computer.

Just got back from a 2kmi trip. Averaged ~21.5mpg calc. This is with climbing almost (10) 7-10k ft peaks.
MPG has improved about 1 since 5kmi.

Full hwy cruising at 70 is now about 22mpg calc.

Driving around town/mix is now 21mpg.

Odo now at 7500mi.

I'm avg 15-16 mpg with a s/c.

then apparently your not using the s/c enough,

I've had my V6 4x4 for just a few weeks now but I seem to be averaging about 21mpg according to the display in mixed, mostly city driving. That seems about right since I've been getting over 400 miles on a tank of gas. I do drive it in H2 mode most of the time.

Well, even though Toyota estimates their MPGs the same, it looks like those of us with SR5 V8s (full-time 4X4) are getting lower gas mileage than the Sports (in 2X4 mode). Obviously it makes sense, but since Toyota doesn't acknowledge the difference, I was hoping it wasn't true.

Oh well.

You folks are scaring me... 12mpg with a small block V8. I was hoping that the 16mpg they rate the thing at for city was going to be the low end. It looks like that is truly the average.

I knew it was going to be bad mileage... but I was optimistic.

Ever-increasing emissions-control standards have slaughtered gas mileage, even with the technological advancements of modern engines. Can you imagine being an automotive engineer?

Boss says . . .

1. We need more power from our engines.
2. Although, we also need better fuel economy.
3. Therefore, we need lighter vehicles.
4. But they still need even better safety standards.
4. And we need to eliminate emissions as well.

Good point about the emissions...
Older cars had 1 cat, the 4R v6 has 4 cats. We assume the cats are better flowing now, but either way, cats are restrictive by their very nature.
