Real World MPG with 5th Gen?

Now that I've had my ICON lift and 285 KO2's for a while, I can say that I went from 19.3 to 18.6 average with mostly Houston rush hour highway driving. I'm happy only losing 0.7 MPG after adding lift and tires. And yes, this is manually calculated and corrected for tire size.

On the way home from picking up my new-to-me 2015 SR5 4x4 I drove ~350 miles from NorCal to Los Angeles. It was quite hot much of the way (90+ degrees) but with just me in the car in a stock vehicle at more-or-less 70mph I got over 22mpg (using GasTracker app). I noticed it dropped quite quickly in the few days I drove it at home on city streets.

I don't know what it is, but that stretch of the 5 between Sacramento and the grapevine used to give me the best mileage too. My 3rd gen would regularly return 22 - 23mpg on that section while keeping up with the fast lane (70-80mph+).

I just got back from a 3000 mile round trip from Texas-New Mexico-Colorado and back. 2016 Trail with stock size Goodyear Duratracs. Over the trip I averaged about 18 MPG. Just me and about 200lbs of stuff. All the way out of Texas it was 75-80, then wheeling in Silverton area for 3 days, then home at 75-80 on I-10. I did notice worse mileage with the lower octane gas up there(85 octane? What tha?)

I just finished a 6700 mile trip with a brand new stock Trail Edition and averaged 21 mpg.

If the details matter, I drove from west Texas to south Florida, then to Portland OR, then back home via California, Arizona, and New Mexico. I mostly stayed off interstates, did some dirt road and city driving, and pretty much drove at the speed limits. The only thing I consciously tried was to accelerate slowly; otherwise I didn't baby it.

My highway MPGs - better than expected

I have about 3k miles on my '16 TEP, and I was curious how the highway mileage was.

I did two tests. Top tier gas used.

~121 miles, flat, CC at 71mph, AC on - 24.7mpg calculated. I-90 in Ohio.

~135 miles, rolling hills, CC at 74mph, some AC - 23.6mpg calculated. (It had to drop a gear a couple times for a few seconds on a couple slopes.) I-77 in Ohio. Also, there was a stretch of about 6 miles where the speed dropped to about 60mph in construction, and I used CC for that part as well.

Again, this is not going by the trip computer-- it's calculated from amount needed to refill the tank. Now, there is always the small differences in gas pumps/topping off etc., but I tried to keep it as even as possible by topping off with one squeeze of the pump handle after it stopped.

Very pleasantly surprised by this. But any sort of mixed driving brings it down to 19-20mpg.

Just thought I'd share.

Just got mine yesterday and I'm getting 21.4 doing like 80

I just got a 2016 te with 9500 miles on it. It was reading 13.4 mpg on the dash. I have driven it for a couple weeks and it now shows 15.6. Not happy with this I did the calculation based on mileage and how much I put back in it. I calculated something like 22.5 mpg here in ne ohio mixed driving.

Merged your thread with 35 pages of mpg goodness.

my MPGs have dropped 2.5gal over the past few months for some reason. nothing has changed in that time other than it being summer. won't lie...kinda bums me out seeing 16.5 consistently. didn't notice that kind of drop in my Outback, but maybe it just didn't register as it was a smaller %age.

Weird, gas mileage usually increases in the summer with warmer air... Although I doubt it would affect you that much, perhaps with summer months and warmer weather you are driving with your windows open more? Open windows increases drag, thus lowers fuel economy. Based on the vehicles shape, you can expect 8-20% hit on gas mileage with Windows down at highway speeds, with SUVs being on the lower end due to their already boxy shape (sedans have a more noticeable hit). Most people think running the AC is more work on your engine, but it's negligible compared to the drag you create by driving down the highway with your windows open.

I just returned from two weeks vacation road trip. Total 5423 miles till the last fuel stop. I burned total 255.96 gallons of fuel what brings the average to 21.187 mpg real calculated (the "car computer" is still showing 20.7mpg) . All kind of driving: up to 85mph on freeways, climbing to 14100 ft on Pikes Peak road, some city traffic crossing on a way, once I got stuck for 30 minutes in traffic because of "major crash on the highway", then crawling on I25 through Denver at he beginning of Labor Day weekend. I did also go 4x4 on some scenic dirt roads etc. Looks like everything you can do in stock 4Runner.

I'm quite happy with the score, and what surprised me the most was quality of ride with stock size KO2 pumped up to 42psi. Even 680miles "hops" we relaxing. It felt more like I was sitting on a sofa watching the moving scenery rather than driving 5000 pounds SUV. What a wonderful car it is. :humble:

From each fueling I can see that speed kills the mpg in 4Runner. Whenever I had long and fast hops on freeways (75-85mph) to fuel efficiency drops down to 18-19mpg (One hop was constant 85mph and it resulted in 18.2mpg). The best I got was 23.87mpg when I was doing scenery driving on back roads in Montana at 45-55mph. When driving at 60-70mph I got around 21-22mpg.

I've got a 2016 SR5 w/ about 1500 miles on the ODO.

So far I have only done one fill up where I actually measured my MPG. The rest have had too much idling, test drives, refueling from the dealer, etc to test.

I got 18.62mpg with about 70/30 city/hwy. The ECU said 18.4~mpg. Pretty close.

I have around 21,000 miles of fuel logs. My 2015 is currently a little above 32,000 miles. I started really keeping track of fuel mileage at close to 11,000 miles.
The Fuelio app shows I am averaging 19.56 mpg over those 21k miles I have tracked fuel usage. The fuel mileage calculator on my 4Runner is almost spot on at 19.4 over 32k miles. I would imagine my gas mileage was slightly lower at first, before I started keeping track, but I don't have any data to back up that claim.
My fuel mileage has slowly went up lately, mainly because I have slowed my driving down 2 or 3 miles an hour. I wouldn't be surprised if the fuel mileage calculator on my 4Runner tripped over to 19.5 soon. It's been on 19.4 for a long time.
I drive mostly highway with hills mixed in the drive.

First tank on my new 4X4 Limited yielded a flat 20 mpg measured by the onboard computer but backed up by casual cross-checking at fill up time. This was almost all highway driving, probably averaging close to 65-70 mph. Factor in that appx. 100 miles of this was somewhat hilly (by no stretch mountainous) with a lot of subsequent downshifting, given that I knew no better than to just keep it in "D".
