Real World MPG with 5th Gen?

Definitely agree with the driving habits. But even when I drove it super casually when I had it stock, I still didn't get close to those numbers. Not really complaining. Just more like a "damn, I'm impressed!" It was to a point where I check my brakes just to make sure they weren't dragging, etc.

Almost had 22 on this tank, but a windy, somewhat hilly drive north brought me down. PS I'm usually at 75-80 on the highway, usually with A/C rather than windows.

My thoughts on MPG based on owning three T4R's, all similarly modified. The current model is a 17 Pro. MPG is a function of fuel, driving style, vehicle load out, tires, stance, speed and road conditions.

1. Regular or Premium: Data I keep shows premium equals slightly better MPG.

2. Fuel: Winter or Summer Blend makes a difference. Summer Blend equals better MPG

3. Throttle input: Easy-Medium or hard makes a difference in MPG.

4. Geography: Flat, rolling hills, steep hills. enough said here

5. Cruise control: I love the 4Runner, but the most worthless CC in any car owned or driven. It's marginally effective in flat terrain only. Best full MPG obtained by using the right foot and gradual throttle increases anticipating rood conditions noted in point 4.

6. MPG Gauge: Just about as bad as Cruise control. I always compute MPG based on trying to fuel up to same level and use gallons filled to miles driven. Clearly some subjectivity here, but better accuracy then using then equipped gauge.

7. Sprint Controller: Only increases throttle response. Found best MPG obtained keeping it set at sport 2-IMO best compromise.

8. Vehicle loading: How much weight loaded in vehicle.....roof rack only = increased resistance. Load something on the roof and you have substantially increased the resistance on the moving brick. Same applies to towing.

For me boils down to what works best for me = acceptable MPG.

Did I mention I just love the 4Runner????

Back in January of this year I was getting about 14.8 mpg avg bone stock. Currently I have TRDP wheels with SL Hankook dynapro atm stock size and I'm averaging 16.7 mpg with the same type of driving and commute. Must be that summer blend gas:shrug:

The MPG gauge is very accurate. If you’ve changed tire size then that’s on you. If you don’t reset it at fill up then how can you compare? I’ve got 90,000 miles of mileage data, probably 80,000 includes the computer readout at every tank as well as range. It’s rarely off by more than .5 mpg.

Is the MPG gauge off consistently (high or low) from miles/(fill volume). The geek in me want to ask you what the mean and standard deviation of the difference.

My ‘18 TRDP hasn’t gotten much over 15-16 mpg since I’ve had it. I’ve heard that after the car is “broken in” it should improve. Could be a myth so I’m not holding my breath.

No it's not consistently high or low. It really seems like it depends on the accuracy of the auto stop on the pump... and all that temperature stuff mentioned above.
Here's a trip I took last week From Northern NV to Central Coast Cali. worst MPGs are definitely on HWY 5 . I've posted tons of other charts previously.

Code:
mpg	Computer
19.94	20.80
22.58	21.00
20.72	21.00
21.52	21.30
25.2	24.70
19.9	19.70
Average:
21.64	21.42

Real world MPG...

1. Drove from my home to the gas station.
2. Filled up with 93 (Shell), reset everything.
3. Drove ~250 miles to and from Florence while picking up a set of NFAB bars for our 2010. Temp was ~75* out.
4. Got back to Huntersville, filled back up at the exact same gas station.
5. Calculated a surprising 20.7MPG! The gauge actually read 20.3, so not that far off!

I was thoroughly impressed to say the least! Our truck is a 2010 SR5, V6, 4wd, with a 3" lift and 285/70s. I ran anywhere from 65-75mph on the main roads, but used my phone and calculated the average speed of the entire trip to be 56mph.

About 3000 miles using Fuelly.com to track actual mileage. 21.7 mpg, but my area is rural, no traffic, and I am pretty light on the pedal. Dash usually shows 22.5.

I’ve tracked every drop of fuel since new (using Fuelly). I’m at about 8,500 miles now and I’ve averaged 18.7 MPG with a city/highway split of 40%/60%. My city driving has involved bumper-to-bumper traffic. I do tend to drive it with fuel economy in mind.

On pure highway and driving conservatively, I tend to get 21-22.5.

Can I ask why people are using super?

I have the same question. I use 89 (midgrade) but never seen the reason of using 91/93 (premium) unless boosted. I use 89 because as a kid, I was always taught to use midgrade to save the engine for long term ownership. Its probably just crazy superstition on my parents part that was engrained into my mind, but we had a Volvo GL 240 sedan that had just under 400k miles on the engine. It was always filled up with midgrade.

with my SR5 Im averaging right now about 19.5 mpg. my commute is about 25 miles each way and barely any traffic. no freeway/highway driving either.

not sure if the fact my 4runner is stock or not. My coworker averages 21 mpg. his commute is 3x mine.

both of us use 87.

While some of you are citing your tires, few seem to be considering tire pressure. Running at 32 psi vs. 40 psi. must have some effect.

So far I'm getting around 16 to about 19 MPG. My driving is a big mix anywhere from driving around town in bumper to bumper traffic or going about 80 on the highway or interstate.

2018 OR with 2" lift in the front and 1" lift in the rear
Stock tires and rims
87 octane
