There are two types of Prius drivers I've seen out here.
1. Drive slow in the passing lane.
2. Drive fast, weave, dont use signals.
and I'm almost positive they dont get 51 if they are in the #2 group. I had to drive one when I was a parts runner for a dealership awhile back. I never held a battery charge in that thing. They are also really light and cheap feeling. I'm not sure thats the case in the newer generations of them, but skinny tires, light weight chassis, and cheapo seats, made me get an accord hybrid when I was in the market for a commuter. Mid-size sedan that is comfortable, non-hybrid looking, and still got 700 miles to the tank. I miss that car...
but back to topic, when I upgraded to 285 MTs and put the dual swingout bumper on, my mpg dropped from 18-19mpg to 16-17mpg for daily driving. Makes me want to find a beater civic manual for commuting.
yea i dont wanna play w/ hybrids anymore.. the initial premium you pay and the depreciation is worse than its non-hybrid counterpart after warranties expire just isnt worth it (i.e. hybrid camry)... got my eyeball on the 2018 accords with the 1.5 turbo which epa estimates 33mpg.. not the highest mpg sedan in the segment but with 200lbs torque at 1900rpm makes up for it.

Yes, that's my 4runner in Avatar but not sure what mods you mean.. only thing on there is D-rings in front and OEM Tube Steps so doubt those would do anything perceivable to mileage. Regardless, I suspect what you say about nothing being wrong with my rig is true because I had two hours and change so I set out this morning to take a 150 mile roundtrip from my local Safeway gas out and back on I-5 between Tacoma and Chehalis...
...but I forgot there is no such thing as a 2.5 hour 150 mile round trip in this area anymore... BECAUSE EVEN AT 9AM traffic in both directions is gridlocked :lock1: . Perhaps anyone else from this area can feel me on this... I grew up here and love the pacific northwest but I am so sick of the congestion in recent decades that I want to move to Bozeman or something....
... anyway I digress... I did manage to take 71 mile trip in that 2 hours and found that I was able to get 20.5 MPG in mostly stop and go freeway traffic which matches to my gas receipt calculation upon my return.
SOOO - obviously my rig can do economy in the specified range for a freeway trip but what still puzzles me is why my 15 mile round trip normal work commute with ginger driving and nothing else different than this freeway trip today only gets me 14 MPG at best.
What gives?

In general the biggest mpg killers for a truck are:
Sitting in traffic (ZERO mpg)
Shit on your roof (-5 mpg)
bad/aggressive/fast driving (-4 mpg)
mechanical stuff like lift/tires/bad alignment/brake dragging/bad O2 sensor (-2 mpg)
My truck got about 17.5 when stock and now 16.5 lifted in mostly city driving. It is just reality for this type of vehicle. My Focus gets 30+ no matter how hard I thrash it, but it can't even clear a curb.

Dunno man. I live in the same area (Kent, technically) and spend a lot of time driving in and around Seattle/Bellevue and up into the mountains and my MPGs are not nearly as bad as yours. I've got a 2.5" lift, stock size KO2s and a SSO roof rack and I average 16.5-17 MPG, but hit closer to 20 on open hwy.

About 16mpg since I put on the BFG KO2's. It wasn't much better than that before. I"m at sea level.

Bone stock ‘14 Trail Premium w/o KDSS that averaged 19.1 since the first day. Upgraded the suspension with the Bilstein FJ TRD Kit and laced up 275 KO2’s on my stock wheels and I’ve dropped to 17.7 through 3 tanks of mixed driving. Still a hell of a lot better than both my LCs!

I fueled up the other day and got 20.3MPG on the tank. My lifetime average so far is 20.4 with a best of 22 when it was bone stock.

what tires do you have on that rig? they dont look like all season passenger tires

Tires are stock Nitto Grapplers that come OEM on the Pro wheels. They actually seem pretty smooth on HWY travel for what they are. Not exactly hardcore offroad tires but certainly not like the Toyo HT's I had most of the time on my '06 Sport either. The 'o6 rig with the HT's was glassy smooth on the freeway at speeds up to 90 whereas the Pro feels less than smooth over 75. I think much of that is the shock and wheel setup on the Pro but also seems to me like the gearing is a bit different than on the '06 sport too.
Anyway, many years to come with it so we'll see how it grows on me.

Ok, some of you guys are getting crazy good MPG. I've been stuck at 15.5-15.8 for mine, 2015 trail.
Have Michelin Defenders on mine with no other mods. I'm the third owner.
Is everyone that is getting 17-20 MPG have 2wd or 4? I'm genuinely curious. I'm wondering if a previous owner modified something on this truck. I can't find anything so far.

Read up on hypermiling. I am up to 19.8mpg. Goal is 21-22mpg.
Hypermiling? Ok. Thanks. Never heard of it until now.
ETA: I just googled it. I already do most of that and I have no load on my vehicle. No rack, not towing or carrying anything but myself. And I sure as hell am not going to restrict my AC usage in the Texas summer heat.
If that's what everyone is doing to get better MPG, I'm still screwed.
