Real World MPG with 5th Gen?

Right, the better tires are worth more to me than mpg. But, like stated above, I'd like to find figure out the reason it is that low.

these vehicles are not great for MPG compared to other trucks. the V6 is under powered . if it had more torque the MPG would be higher esp in areas of mountains/hills. then the design is like a block , no smooth air flow when this comes down the road ,so the higher the speed the MPG drops.

my 2016 @45-55MPH small hills not flat ground I get 19.6 MPH. @60 MPH 18.7MPG then @70 MPH 18.2 MPG. @ 80 MPH 17.9 MPG...

also type of gas used NO MPG change 87-93 octane.

on elevation use I do no see that this would have much if any effect on MPG .. if operated on high elevations and no big grades to climb should not be any difference since these do not have carbs in them. the PCM has sensors to properly adjust for elevation . the air fuel ratios are locked in very tightly .

the higher the elevation will cause a loss of power though. and this vehicle at sea level is not all that much of a power house ride. so if you are up high elevation and climb steep grades then this may be why its 13 MPG...

this vehicle needs 50 more HP...

Whats the temperature like in your area at the moment? Colder temps, more fuel used, lower MPG. Simple as that. Your driving style, weather, flat vs hilly roads etc all factor in.

On that note, I was seeing 19.6-19.8 with mostly freeway driving. Now that its really cold here in the midwest, its down to 16.8-16.9

I never worry about mpg in town or on short trips, but I've always calculated it for each tankful on longer trips. From the very start our '16 Trail has been getting 19-19.5 mpgUS on trips, which always means heading up into the coastal mountains as we are only 50 feet above sea level here in Agassiz, B.C. - Ted

Altitude is one factor as others mention, and cold weather isn't going to help you at all, so keep that in mind.

I was getting ~17 with temps in the 50s and 60s, and am now down to 15 with temps in the 30s and 40s.

My car has 600 miles on it.

You might want to talk to the dealership

I know I'm much further down elevation and temperature wise, but I don't get near 13 mpg. I have a lift 285s and a full metal bumper, considering my age I tend to drive the Runner pretty briskly. I'm getting 16.4 mpg right now. I can get about 17-18 with easy driving. So like I said, I would take it to the dealership. I recall reading a similar post like this a couple of years ago and they took it to the dealer and found something wrong with it. Best of luck.

I bought my 16 trail in July and immediately put 275/70 KO2s on it so I am not sure what the mpg would have been stock. My mpg definitely improved as I put more miles on it. I am at about 9500 now and around Dallas I average 16-18 and on the highways I average 19-21. I don't granny it but I don't drive it like I drove my mustang either around town. I could probably improve the city by driving more smoothly in traffic. I usually stick to 73-75 on the highways.

Hello fellow Dallas person lol, I average about 18 city/highway combined with a 3in lift and 285s.

OP - if you're going by the gauage, have you try to reset it everytime you pump gas?

It's not about the money, it's about the fact that I'm a good 4-5 mpg less than most of you AND I currently have stock tires. So I just want to make sure it's not something I should talk to the dealer about and make sure nothing is wrong.
Why settle for less if there's no apparent reason to. You know?

What do your ears tell you? I can't imagine an engine/vehicle getting 23% less performance without the evidence being obvious.

What did your last vehicle get compared to posted estimates? This isn't your first vehicle, is it?

I've had my tank about ten months and I get about 10-11 mpg around my small stop sign cluttered town. I do try to ease on the gas and coast to stops but sometimes I like to feel this brute get up and go. On a positive note, coming down out of the mountains it got 60 mpg. So it all evens out. lol

P. S. I've bolted on 145 lbs of steel so far.

With all else being equal (flat ground...). At higher altitude your 4runner will get better mpg. Seems counterintuitive at first since there is less power... but it typically improves. Three main reasons. 1. Less wind resistance. 2. Less pumping loss in the motor. 3. Smaller effective displacement.

I maintain the fact that I don't really think this truck is underpowered - the real culprit is the 5AT. A 6 or 8 AT (more opportunities to upshift) would prevent a lot of the gear holding that happens around 2500-3500 rpms around town - which quickly kills MPG.

Hi I am new here - Just bought my first Toyota - a brand new 2016 SR5 4x2 in October - have about 3K miles on it now - getting 18.7 MPG which isn't too bad since I mostly drive in rush hour commutes. I think they could've improved the MPG's though. It's getting about the same as a 2000 Lexus RX300 I had for several years.

It seems like I'm getting pretty good MPGs compared to the other posts I've read. Probably because mine is a 4x2 and I'm sure everyone here has 4x4.

I know one thing-the cold and wind really sucks the fuel! Getting around 15-16 mpg here in arctic Iowa on the last few tanks. My CX-5 is only getting about 22-24 MPG as well, so the cold really sucks the fuel!

I drive mostly highway 75-80 mph and avg 18mpg after 33k miles. I have driven many body on frame SUV's and none get good gas mileage. The worst:
1. Hummer H2. 9-10 mpg. Tank too small and should have come with Duramax diesel but would not fit the engine compartment.
2. Excursion v-10
3. Durango 5.9 L v-8 AWD
4. Explorer v-8 AWD
5. Sequoia, 14 mpg over 140k miles

So around town it sucks of course 16.7 but on recent trip driving 80mph (most of the time) got a steady 18.7 with 285s . 325 mi on a tank which for me & my bladder whew ! Mind you no headwind to kill it .:hiding: thought it was pretty good ! I know I'm driving a rolling box so mileage isn't a huge deal to me , woulda bought a prius if so .....
