Real World MPG with 5th Gen?

So Monday I took the first or soon to be many Interstate trips with my 4Runner.

It was great, she drove great other than sucking down gas. I was surprised that the tank MPG was 17.9 versus my previous 2 tanks of about 18.9.

Granted my 4Runner is still getting broken in, but this is the first vehicle I've ever owned that got worse MPG on interstate than on highways.

Granted I could have gotten better MPG but I drove my usual 80+ MPH on the interstate. But still happy overall

Moved and merged to the large mpg thread.

Wait...80+ mph in a heavy, brick of a BOF SUV and your sad to see 18 mpg?

My first truck was a 1984 Hilux 4x4. 22R, 5 speed, nothing else. I put on a Rancho 3" lift and 31" Dunlop mud tires and steel chromed wheels. Hey I was 16 and in high school. I was stoked. It got 16 mpg and 5th gear was..well...not used much.

Point is...you have 270 horses, driving 80 mph, in a SUV that weighs 5000 lbs and have all the comfort, safety and room that my vinyl floored, no power steering or AC truck doing 60 floored darn near could only dream of.

We are spoiled with today's vehicles.

Yeah I agree we are spoiled. This is just my first truckish vehicle. Used to cars and such. Not complaining. Just surprised at the decrease in fuel economy.

Well since this your first, don't pay attention to the mileage. Fill it up when your empty and for your sake, USE it for it was built for. Yeah the fuel mileage sucks but it will take you into the hills, through snow, camping and places a car or cross over would cry at the thought of.

Only then will the light come on. Otherwise...you are driving a big, heavy, under powered car that will just sour you on truly one of the last off-road vehicles made and you will fill out a consumer report survey that will put the 4Runner on the same path of the Nissan Pathfinder or worse...

I'm being harsh but it is tongue in cheek. Enjoy it man!:yield:

I drive 4000 miles a month highway in my '16 SR5 with KO2s.

I have never gotten above 19.5 and generally get 17.4 at typical south Florida freeway speeds. If I take country back roads and stick to 65mph I'll push 20.

I calculate my mpg every fill up. I've tried every trick and the only way to get it higher is to slow down.

Yeah I've been tracking my cars with Fuelly for a while. I just need to get used to the fact that with the 4Runner I'm gonna burn more gas to go faster (more so than I'm used to). Still worth it.

My son and I just drove to AZ and back from Florida w over 5000 miles for the whole trip w a lot of trail rides in the desert and mountains. Lift, 33s, bumper and winch, full skids and sliders (all steel), roof rack, fridge, recovery gear and tools w 400lbs of humans and our clothes. Computer said 14.1 mpg avg for most of the trip. Not bad if you consider the disadvantage of weight (close to 6000lbs gvw) and wind resistance. We traded driving duties electing to go straight through out there and back to save money on hotels.
Truck ran great ending up w 95,000 miles on the odo. Only flaw was cruise control. It has a heavy foot lol. So on bridges and mountain grades I would turn it off which seems to help overall mileage, but I have no real proof of that. So, in conclusion, DO NOT buy this vehicle if you want to load it down and average over 20 mpg.

I think the Gobi might have been a bigger hit than I expected, although I don't have any real controlled testing to be certain. I had it installed on the 20th and then commenced a modestly loaded road trip (nothing on the Gobi though) and experienced my worst mileage yet. I'm not terribly concerned, although it would be nice to have better mileage. More than anything it's concern about range reduction.

I have 1350 miles on my 2016 TEP w/KDSS. I swapped the stock tires for a C-rated 265/70r17 BFG KO2 when I had 80 miles on the truck. I haven't hand calculated my MPG's but according to the computer I'm averaging 18.3 MPG. I should also add that we've been having a stormy period in the Rocky Mountain west recently, and in the first 1350 miles, I have driven around 250 miles in 4Hi.

I still wish I had purchased a Limited, and I'll be swapping for one before next winter, but I am pleased with the fuel economy of the truck, along with many other aspects of it.

Fuel mileage

When I first got my 2012 4 runner trail edition I have the daily mileage up to 17.1 mpg...

most recently it has gone down to 16.6 mpg..

only things I did was replaced air filter with K&N filter only. and changed the plugs to E3 plugs.

when i first did the air filter swap and plug swap my mileage was still at 17.1 to 17.0 but since it has gotten cold I have noticed the mileage has been going down.

I am gonna try the royal purple injector cleaner to see what happens.

was curious if anyone else has seen this?

There's slightly less energy in winter blend gas. Also, your vehicle will not be as efficient getting up to operating temperature in the colder climates.

I think what you are seeing is normal and you should wait until summer and see if it improves.

All depends on how you drive. Gotta remember it isn't a prius. Cold weather causes lower fuel econ. Longer for the motor to warm up, oils in diffs and such are all thick and cold. Have you checked your tire pressures since the temp drop?

Merged.

Wish I could get 16.6 but some get more and others get less. The mileage you get depends on many factors. My TEP is almost 6 months old and my average MPG is 15.69. The best MPG that I've attained is 17.71. The worse being 14.31

You are aware that you purchased a 4Runner right? Considering that you are going through some effort to correct a .5 MPG drop tells me you might not realize that these vehicles are not known for their fuel efficiency. :fencing:

yep fully aware I purchased a 4 runner.. I love it...

I got rid of a 2010 Tacoma that was lifted with 33's for this so the fuel mileage I am getting with this is much better then the truck.. Best I got out of the truck was 16 mpg......

I was more concerned that the changes I made did not adversely affect my mileage.

Half an MPG is such a small variance though, at least for me. I fluctuate between 1 MPG all the time so I would not bat an eye at a drop. If I started getting 13 MPG though I'd begin the thought process of WTF is going on.

I'd say you are within the norms of what many others are getting. I also make sure to go off of the MPG calculation external to what the trip computer shows.

So far, mine is averaging around 14ish. But there are reasons. We've only been using it in city driving and the worst kind.... Take my daughter to school - 4 miles roundtrip. Then, my wife goes to the park to run - 2 miles roundtrip. Take it to the grocery store - 3 miles roundtrip. Between that kind of driving (all stop-n-go, up and down steep hills) and the cold weather (winter fuel...) I'm not really surprised. We will have a road trip this weekend that will allow us to take it, for the first time, on the interstate for more than a a few miles. I'll try and report back what we get on that.

I bought it from a guy who put 7800 miles on it and it had 18.2mpg on the computer and I don't think he had reset it in a long time. His driving was mostly county roads, not a ton of interstate, but not a lot of city either. That was completely stock. Before I could check mileage, I bought new AT tires (stock size but heavier by around 6lbs per tire...) so I don't know what to expect. I'm hoping to get close 19/20 for pure interstate. I can live with <15mpg in the city driving, because honestly, we put so few miles on it, 1 tank lasts us 2 weeks... even at the horrible mpg...

2014 4runner bad gas mileage

I was wondering if any of you have good suggestions for mods to boost my gas mileage or ideas why I am getting terrible gas mileage.

Here's the problem

I drive 300 miles round trip 5 days a week to and from college, 55 miles are highway and 5 are in town driving. (60 round trip miles per day) M-F.

Which in reality I drive almost 700 miles per week plus the 300 miles to school and back 5 days a week... so im driving 1000 miles per week crazy!

I only get about 15 mpg right now.. and that is highway driving and city driving combined..

Which means I am buying gas at 45 bucks a tank every 2-3 days if that. During the summer I would only have to buy 1 tank every 4 or 4.5 days... and I would get about 18.7 mpg

Also the engine does not warm up for at least 30 minutes maybe longer depending how cold the outside temperature is.

What can I do to improve gas mileage (besides moving closer which is not an) option...

Any modifications that can boost my mpg or is there something wrong with my vehicle?

Thanks
