Real World MPG with 5th Gen?

Not warming up for 30 minutes doesn't sound right to me. It should be less than 5 if you are driving. Maybe the thermostat on your radiator is stuck open or something?

I see from your sig that you are running A/T tires. Those will hurt your mileage a bit over the stock ones, but I wouldn't think TOO much. Are they new?

But to more specifically answer your question: no there is not really a quick fix or mod to improve MPG. Otherwise Toyota would've done it years ago.

Other things to think about:

Are your tires properly inflated?

Are you driving over 80mph on the highway?

Are you using the right kind of oil (synthetic 0W-20)?

Do you have a big roof rack?

18.7 is pretty close to what others get with summer gas. 15-16 is close to what a lot of people get with winter gas. Trying to squeak out another couple MPG's isn't going to make a big financial impact on your costs.

I was wondering if any of you have good suggestions for mods to boost my gas mileage or ideas why I am getting terrible gas mileage.

Here's the problem

I drive 300 miles round trip 5 days a week to and from college, 55 miles are highway and 5 are in town driving. (60 round trip miles per day) M-F.

Which in reality I drive almost 700 miles per week plus the 300 miles to school and back 5 days a week... so im driving 1000 miles per week crazy!

I only get about 15 mpg right now.. and that is highway driving and city driving combined..

Which means I am buying gas at 45 bucks a tank every 2-3 days if that. During the summer I would only have to buy 1 tank every 4 or 4.5 days... and I would get about 18.7 mpg

Also the engine does not warm up for at least 30 minutes maybe longer depending how cold the outside temperature is.

What can I do to improve gas mileage (besides moving closer which is not an) option...

Any modifications that can boost my mpg or is there something wrong with my vehicle?

Thanks

Read this thread I just merged your thread into. Learn a bit.

I was thinking the same with the thermostat.
Thank you I will definitely have it checked out soon. It dropped to 14.9mpg by the afternoon this morning I was getting 16.5 sat for 5 hours while in classes. There's gotta be something wrong haha. [emoji51]

There's slightly less energy in winter blend gas. Also, your vehicle will not be as efficient getting up to operating temperature in the colder climates.

I think what you are seeing is normal and you should wait until summer and see if it improves.

Gawd I hope so. I'm just a month in and I'm getting 12.6 mpg. Winter gas and colder temps are driving me crazy. Where's my 17?

Never seen 17, I'm sitting at 13.6 mpg. See sig for details on my rig, best I've seen is 14.8 mpg avg.

I just filled up at my normal gas station with E10 at $2.07/gal. 100% gas at my station is currently $2.37/gal. That's 14.5% more. All my other vehicles I tested never gained more than 10% increase and usually less than 5% so it's not worth it based on money. Are there other benefits for a 4R that could warrant getting 100%? They are designed to handle E10 so just curious...

I live in Minnesota, my 16 SR5 takes forever to warm up to normal operating temp. I cannot even turn on the heater until I am half way to work in the morning. However, I am not lead-footed and I average around 17-18 with winter gas and 80% non-highway driving.

I live in western PA so its not the flattest but nothing like the mountains out west. With 265's and about a 65/35 mix of hwy (70mph cruise) and city, I get about 16mpg. Over all for what it is I can't complain. Anything is better than my 12mpg diesel truck.

We just drove 370 miles from Gdansk to Wroclaw all non stop highway (with one stop for fuel) at 75-85 mph (speed limit is 90 mph here). In 2012 SR5 no mods besides BFG KO2 C rated, I got 18.0 mpg. My wife was driving 4Runner and I was going in my 95 Tacoma 4x4 2.7l (4-banger) Ex Cab (with camper shell). Also stock besides 30x9R15 BGG KO2 tires. Tacoma also did 18.0 mpg.

This is quite interesting that both trucks do almost exactly the same mph in all different conditions - 15-16mpg driving from home to grocery store and back, 20+ mpg on country roads, and 18-19 mpg speeding 70+ mph on highway. Different trucks, different engines, different ages, but work the same.

In my town, drive 1/4 mile stop at a stop sign. Repeat. 10 - 11 mpg.

On highway, 65 - 70 mph. 19 - 20 mpg.

2016 TRD Pro with 150 lbs of steel bolted on and AT tires.

Winter gas? Screw it, I don't feel like looking that up.

Just pump and go. If you wanted an efficient commuter vehicle, should've bought a Prius!

15.5 mpg

Driving in stop and go 6 miles to work and 6 back plus some warm up in the driveway. Northern NJ winter. Have seen about 17.8 MPH on the highway.

Today I did 5 hours highway, which was 2.5hrs and then return. On the way I had 21mpg and on return 19.5mpg (against wind).

Im running 5x 285s with stock sr5 wheels, we were 2 adults, 1 child, two dogs and 2 bags in the back (45lbs each).

No hills, was cold so gas get worst here in Canada winter (-13F today) and 65mph on cruise control.

Just did about 90 miles. Straight interstate at approx 70mph. Computer says 20.9 mpg. I'm pretty happy with that. I'll doublecheck when I get back to see how accurate that is with manual calculations.

Man, I remember minnesota winters. Thank goodness I have a remote starter here on the west coast

My on-board computer reads 18.9mpg.

All stock with Michelin LTX AT2 (P265/70/17) @ 32psi.

Daily commute is 7 miles of 55mph hilly highway, then 5 miles of stop-and-go.
