West Texas Highway Vs City

I recently got my 17 TRD ORP and have put on over 3,000 miles in the past month since getting her. I have somehow managed to get better mileage in city driving (between 16 and 18) than I do at West Texas highway speeds. At 80-85 mph I will average about 17.5. The faster I go, the lower that number gets. Worst I've gotten was driving back from Dallas a few weeks ago, averaged about 90mph the whole way back and got 14mpg.

I get almost exactly 565kms out of a full tank of gas. When it was new it was 620! Well at least I didn't buy my own Exxon Valdez for the fuel economy. :becky:

I get 12.9 according to the computer under mixed driving, even though it's mostly freeway , the LA commute is pretty much stop and go. I'm also weighed down quite a bit by mods.

Six months since my last post above...have added snorkel, winch bumper/winch and rooftop tent since then. Getting 12.8 mpg (computer and manual calc). People hypermiling to hit 18, 19 or 20 mpg from 17...hahahaha I wish. This not a contest I want to win but I want a cookie.

I would highly doubt that's possible in any kind of "real world" conditions, even summer.

My absolute best tank was 12.5L/100km (18.817 MPG) last November, and that was a pretty damned gentle drive. Almost the entire tank was burned on the highway with the cruise control set at 110 km/h (68mph) or less on a few rural roads (70 and 90 zones). Maybe only the first and last 10 kms were around town, but the dog was in the back so I was pretty light on the throttle so he'd not get banged around back there.

Maybe you could hit 20s on a perfect day, in an empty truck, with the wind at your back, and the entire road trip on a downward slope, while driving the 4RUNNER around as if it was a Prius in the hands of some tree-hugging hippie.

It happens all the time. Absolutely you can get into the 20-22 mpg range at normal 70 mph speeds. Not around town but on flat, gently rolling terrain? Sure. Your problem was using cruise control. Cruise control = less efficient.

My best tank was 20.8 as a one off. Not really babying it either, but it was through New Mexico and South Colorado with a 65 MPH speed limit. It was right after a camping trip in Red River and my worst tank spent almost all on trails and largely in 4L.

I average around 18.5 to 19 but hit 20.2 last fill up. It's not hard to do with a mostly stock vehicle and a light foot. I love my 4runner but it is NO fun to drive fast so i just don't. Still it beats my last vehicle and no more having to buy premium gas!

Did a round trip from Toronto to Montreal and back with 2016 TEP with about 10K odo, running stock except for Winterforce AT3/W tires at 38PSI. Nice spring weather though major rain storm for part of the return trip, low teens C temperature.

Highway smooth traffic all the way, cruise set at around 107kph. Including about 20 km if in-town driving in Montreal, average for the trip was a pump-calculated 11.2 Lhk (21 MPUG) -- basically right on rating for highway driving.

Dash computer rating for the trip, reset at the start of the trip, listed 11.1 so reasonably accurate to the real world pump number.

Front bumper is splattered with bugs now too. Damnit.

Pushed it to 700 km on the first tank, in my normal mixed city driving I only get about 500-550.

On a trip from LA to LV i averaged 21mpg doing varying 55mph to 70mph. I did not use cruise control. I was slow going uphill and downhill i went a little faster. Good thing my wife wasn't with me, she'd freak the eff out if i wasn't travelling 5mph faster than the posted speed limit.

These were my own mpg calculation and not the 4runner's gauge, although i find that the 4runner's gauge is pretty spot on with my hand calculations.

This was on 32psi and poorly balanced tires and alignment slightly off.

I'll report back in July with new mpg readings with 38psi, fresh alignment, road forced balanced tires and a wife that won't let me go slower than posted limit.

I've read that concrete roads yield better gas mileage than asphalt as well.

I got one of my best MPG readings ever (24.84) going East to LV. There's almost always a tailwind.
Then I got my worst MPG (15.90) driving around in town, never once went downtown or near the strip.

Was with the wife the other day when she filled up. Doing the math we came up with 20.2 MPG for approx 50/50 city / country driving. This is a little less than our road trip a year or so ago that was mostly highway and yielded approx 22 MPG average for 4700 miles as I remember.

I could confirm, that 4R was not built for good gas mileage. This is not the purpose of owning that vehicle.

Last week I was driving rental brand new QX80 with 1200 miles in it. That truck was huge comparing to my 4R. Still on the drive I used to get 20.5mpg with 4R, I got 22mpg with Infiniti. Yes, it takes some good amount of fuel to start rolling this tank, but once it's moving the air resistance is way less than 4Runner body has. I was driving QX80 at 80mph and the computer was showing between 22 and 24mpg. 4Rnner at that speed gets less than 19mpg.

But while I loved the luxury of fully loaded QX80, I like driving 4R better. All pros in QX80 were related to bells and whistles which this truck was loaded with (auto seat adjustment, all around view camera, driving type selector, auto adjusting mirrors for backup etc...) but I wouldn't pay 30+k price difference for that.

Just registered on the forum today after lurking here for a week or so. A 2010 trail Edition is on my short list and I was wondering what kind of milage you are all getting real world compared to the claimed 17 city, 22 hwy. My 97 SR5 2WD gets 19/20 city and 22 hwy. Thank you! Great forum.

2WD Drive at Highway speeds on my 2016 TE shows that I am getting 16.6 mpg and 320 miles per tank.

I drove from Saint John, New Brunswick to Washington DC in August of 2013 and I got 11.4L/100km. This includes traffic along i95 and highway stops. I did 120kph+ whenever I could.

I rented a 2016 4Runner Sr5 (base) in August 2015 in California. Drove from LA to San Fransisco, down the coast to Paso Robles, then over the Vegas, then back to LA. I got over 21 MPG (even through all of those crazy mountain passes). During the last few days in LA my MPG there was about 18. When doing all that highway driving, I was doing 75mph+ whenever I could... and it was a lot of the time through all of those big uphill/downhill mountain passes as traffic allowed for it. I was extremely impressed.

Admittedly, around Nova Scotia, I get about 13.5L/100km from this time of year until October. This is day-to-day. I occasionally break 13L/100km driving to New Brunswick and once or twice I broke 12L/100km. Again, I drive about 120-130kph whenever I can and the drive ALWAYS has a headwind in one direction and it is quite hilly.

If you live in areas where you don't constantly go up and down hills every time you step in the vehicle, then those higher numbers are very possible.

I did a similar route back in August 2015 but I was doing 75mph+ and got similar mileage.
