Real World MPG with 5th Gen?

Just registered on the forum today after lurking here for a week or so. A 2010 trail Edition is on my short list and I was wondering what kind of milage you are all getting real world compared to the claimed 17 city, 22 hwy. My 97 SR5 2WD gets 19/20 city and 22 hwy. Thank you! Great forum.

My 1997 gets the same as your. Funny how the older one still gets better.

Just finished first road run on my TRDP since installing URD MAF Calibrator. I had URD Set up with settings matching add-ons.

1. Borla Cat
2. TRD CAI

I am running KO'2 and have 1" Toytec front lift removing rake. Drove from NE Pennsylvania to New York 300 miles mixed terrain 60-80MPH averaged 18.6MPG on winter blend fuel.

Again no dyno data, but observations are pedal more responsive and less downshifts from OD lock to pull longer/steep grades. Fuel mileage computed based on miles/ gallons used.

That’s impressive man good job!!! Only problem is I-25 highway runs 80-95mph so I’m sure that’s playing a big role in mine. If I do 60-65 truckers will run me off the road haha

In the Northeast, even running the best Radar---you will be tagged for a major ticket. 95 will get you a free night at the local lock-up.

I know I know I’m starting to take a different route because of the speed. Just amazes me how fast traffic moves here. Thanks for looking out man thats nice of you!

In Poland speed limit on freeways is 140km/h that is 87mph. Most BMW's run at least 10mph over. I' staying on the slow lane between truckers doing 65. that buys me 20+ mpg.

All cool brother, I run the best Radar. Don't push the runner much above 80MPH. Now the other car...........I'll never tell-but the Radar does work.

In my opinion always a tough area to discern what is good MPG due to so many variables.

1. Driving habits: Do you accelerate hard or lightly

2. Speed: Goes without saying

3. Tires: Tire size, type, aggressiveness of tread and height profile all impact engine output and ability to roll

4. Weight: Already a heavy platform at -+4700lbs, any add-on increases weight requiring more energy to roll.

5. Any suspension mod adding height. Due to high profile and relatively flat front, already pushing a lot of air (Resistance). Height of increased ground clearance increasing air running under the vehicle = increased resistance.

6. Fuel in terms of running regular or premium and summer/winter blend. For example, back here in the Northeast, Summer premium works best in my runner with better throttle response. Winter blend fuels negatively affect response and MPG.

7. Road Surface conditions: Affect tire contact and certain type of road surfaces create higher levels of friction=more energy to accelerate and maintain speed.

I like all aspects of my TRDP. No doubt all of us want 350RWHP and 400+ pound/feet of torque coupled to either a short throw 6-speed manual or 6/8 speed auto and getting 20+ mpg. Not on the 5th gen runners.......

Maybe we will see this in the 6th/7th Gen runners. Time will tell

Confirmation from my early post. put in 14.4 gallons to fill tank and had 79.2 miles which gives me 5.6 miles to the gallon.
And that is with no more then 1 min. warm up and no sitting still idling,
my trips have been short under 5 miles with stop and go most times.
I did check the Mass air flow sensor to make sure there was no dirty also
check air box to make sure there were no nests or any other blockage.
I will have a OBD II scan done to see if there are any codes at all right now
only light is the TPMS I think its a dead battery in a sensor.
If anyone in my area has Techstream and could help out with the TPMS that would be great ?
If anyone has any other ideas please feel free to post them.

So i have not read all the posts.... is someone siphoning gas from your truck? I am in Minnesota and have temps below zero and still get 16 plus city. You should invest in a dash cam. If there is nothing wrong mechanically, someone must be stealing your gas. There is no lock on the gas cap.

Yeah, somethings not right with that. I'm assuming you would smell fuel if you had a leak that bad. Have you checked your brake rotor temps after driving it? I wonder if something is dragging. I would think it would be running awful to burn 3x the fuel as normal, so I'm not even sure it's an engine issue.

I do not believe anyone is stealing my gas I have never notice any jump in the needle after sitting over night.
Next warm day I will need to check the toe, I also thought about vehicle drag
and have tried costing in neutral seams to cost good I did not notice any drag
but I will check the rotors.
Also will jack up each corner check things out hub bearings and things
The 4Runner is new to me 1st week of December and the weather has been on the cold side I need to give it a once over.
Thank you for the ideas keep them coming

With stock tires, I used to get about 19 MPG overall in my 2016 SR5 4x4. Since I put BFG K02 265 C-Rated tires on a year ago, I now get about 17 MPG overall, pretty consistently. That's with the BFGs inflated to about 40 PSI, and no other mods.

Are you warming up your 4runner before driving? If you are its a huge waste of gas. Just start her up and keep RPMS low.

I would stop driving it until you figure out what the hell is wrong. Did you forget to tell us about the 10,000 lb sled you're towing?
