Real World MPG with 5th Gen?

Its insane to me how high some of you are reporting. Amazing!

I have ran multiple experiments in a 17 TRD pro stock tires since I put on a Gobi rack, and even trying to stay in ECO mode on FLAT HIGHWAY I get 15.5 MPG (plus very noticeable windnoise). Non lead foot and deliberately trying to drive economically. Add in around town and such, and that drops to 14.7 - 15.1 MPG.

I saw at the mobile 1 station that they claim using "premium +" will increase your gas mileage, but there is a little asterisk next to that claim and I don't see how its possible.

I don't know if due to the octane or lack of ethanol, but my beach place is in a location that sells a lot of non-ethanol (i.e. real gasoline) 93 octane primarily for boaters. I filled up with the stuff once on my way back home and did notice about a 1.5 MPG increase. It still didn't offset the extra cost, though..

My educated guess is around 65. I just spent a few days in the hills of western Kentucky and calculated 23 mpg. Average speed was between 65 - 70. Speeds above 70 will negatively impact mileage.

Stay with Top Tier gas, Google it and will give you a full list of stations that are..
At home I have 3 Costco's within 20minutes of me in different directions. All 3 rotate prices but gas buddy tells me which one has the best price. They are top tier (additives) and I've never had a bad tank. When I travel I stay top tier unless it's urgent or don't have time to look. Twice I've been burned once by Shell(yes they are top tier) and another at a quickmart on the freeway. Mileage and performance dropped bad.
So gas brand does matter.

Sorry to bump my own post but didn't get any comments on this and seems like yet more people are reveling in their 17-21 MPG averages. Anyone in same boat as me? I have no mods on my rig that should negatively impact mileage. Thanks.

Do you idle much? Warming it up or sitting in drive through's?

My real-world is 17ish in city driving. 21ish on the highway. 14ish in the winter. I could probably do a little better all around BUT I'VE GOT PLACES TO GO! lol

Really?? I've been using WaWa gas the last 5 years of ownership. But I don't know if their supplier is the same as top tier gas stations. I also use regular. Was getting around 17/20+ city/highway before the lift. Lifted w/ 285 about a month ago and reading 18.6 mix atm.

^^^ I concur.

Highway driving over 70mpg or so (or roughly 2000 RPM), you're awesome MPG will start to sink fast, no matter how light-footed you drive (with stock size tires).

Every vehicle is going to have a different peak fuel economy at a given speed. It basically operates like a bell curve. I found that 38 mph was consistently the point of the highest mpg I could reach with my last VW TDI (around 60 mpg at that speed in 5th gear). I haven't bothered to investigate any of this with my 4Runner, but I have noticed if I'm running at 40-45 mph with the cruise control on, over relatively level ground, it will climb above 30 mpg.

Wind resistance increases with the square of velocity, so the peak mpg for the 4Runner is probably somewhere between 20 mph and 50 mph. Sorry if that's disappointing news.

Not too much, I usually start it, back out in drive and then gather work stuff for last few minutes before leaving while it idles/warms up in drive. The I drive 20-40 MPH for half the distance to work (3-4 miles) and 50-70 mph on freeway other half. When I get to work, park it and go inside. Repeat process for drive home. Intermittent errands and such. I do Sbux drive through here and there. If anything I guess the short trips could be hurting me (does 7-8 miles trip to work = "granny cycle"?)

If it was mainly highway trip, you should have gotten better range than 18.6. Before I lifted my truck and mounted bigger tires (3" lift + 285/75/17 Ridge Grapplers) I got between 17 to 20mpg. Right now I'm getting exactly whar you're getting at 18.6 lol. If I do mostly city driving now I would not be surprised if I get 15mpg.

Well 18.6 is what I am still reading, I usually cruise near 80 so that may be why it is lower.

Was averaging around 17-18mpg mix of city and stop and go highway. Switched from stock size nittos to c load 285 k02’s and now my tank average is around 16mpg but that’s literally after only 20 min of driving. Thinking it should stay around 16-17mpg mixed.

I wouldn’t be surprised, but you’ll generally get your best mileage with long uninterrupted trips. You’re not likely to get that where speeds are limited below 55. Plus, we all like to get where we’re going in a reasonable amount of time.

I went back and checked the log of my recent trip. Over several tanks, when my average speed was likely less than 65 (55mph zones and construction), my MPG was 23. On the tanks where long stretches of interstate was involved and my average speed was likely 65-70, MPGs calculated out to 21.

Wish I could fill my own tank ... Orygun. Gettin' mid to high 17's (comp). Rural, highway and city (HAH!). Gonna take a trip to CA. and will check both comp and calc.

Did the trip. 20.5 from Central Oregon to Redding, CA. and 19.6 from Weed, CA. back up to C.O. Ain't even gonna talk 'bout while I was in the Bay Area. It sure as hell wasn't mid to high 17's. LOL!

We took a Sunday drive from Buena Vista, CO to Aspen and back over Independence Pass. Both BV and Aspen are at 8,000 ft, and Independence is 12,099. RT gas mileage for the 125 miles was 21.8 MPG. This is in a stock 2016 TEP.

Had my best tank mpg to date last week. Started last Saturday with ~100 miles of highway, cruise control set at 78. The rest of the tank was my normal work commute which is 12 miles, mostly highway. Tank mpg was 17.9 calculated. On the front end of the road trip, I averaged 16.2 all highway, because the speed limit in northern Michigan is 75.

Over the first 3000 miles on a new SR5P, 19.1 mpg. I live at 4700 ft, and drive over 8000 ft passes on longer trips. Stock suspension, nothing heavy hanging off (yet), BFG KO2 265s, C Load.
