Running a 3” lift 285/70/17

So yeah, piss poor mileage married to an anemic motor who’s engine bay is dying for a proper V8.

Took a break in run this past weekend. Highways to Walsenburg, mountain highway to Alamosa & the Sand Dunes, overnighted in Alamosa, then back to Denver'ish via 285, with a stop at Eddyline Brewery in Buena Vista. Around 700 miles total. Got almost 19 MPG overall according to the gas pumps and odometer. 2019 TRD Off-road Premium, 3 inch lift, and 285's. I'm happy with that.

In many ways I agree with the "4Runner isn't a prius" posts.
If a Prius did the job for me I still wouldn't be driving one.
But I like to spend my money on other things beside gas.
I've driven my 4R for 100,000+ miles. I've averaged 21MPG and the average cost per gallon over that time has worked out to $3.19.

$15,190 on gas!
If I got a crappy 15mpg I would've spent $21,267.
$6,000 will buy a lot of beer.

Try a Magnuson supercharger. Didn't seem to hurt the millage I was gettin' with my '13. Butt dyno says it's equal to my Gen 4 V8 Limited.

I recently picked up a 2015 4WD Limited with around 110K miles. It's my first 4Runner and I enjoy the ride. My daily commute in East Texas is around 20 miles and I have been averaging around 16.5 MPG. Not the same mileage as my Prius (which I love), but that's okay.

My poor unicorn I tow up big peak mountain hates the fact it takes so long to get there. I cant seem to hit 5th gear. Maybe a sprint booster will do the trick. Will that make my mpg worse? If I can hit 5th gear my mpg should be better right?

No way. This motor needs to spin to produce power. I keep it in 4th up most of mountain passes I drive. 5th ain’t gonna save you gas in this situation.

You should not tow in 5th gear going up a mountain. (Anywhere really, but we can debate that at a later date.) That’s a sure way to burn up your transmission.

Amazing Mileage...

Amazing 4Runner shit. 26+ mpg from Burns Or. to Vancouver Wa.

Mostly hwy 395, OR 26, WA 14. That was a couple tanks of fuel.

Oregon gas. No cruise control. Kept my foot 'mellow on the pedal'.
Downshifting manually in the hills rather than letting the auto shift down.
Drove the speed limits. (On vacation... so who cares?)


Cruise control from Vancouver back to California... 22.5 mpg.
(That is normal for 65 mph on the freeway.)

My last fill up showed 23.1 mpg on the dash. I hand calculated it and it came out to 23.4 mpg. I do a mix of highway and stop/go driving. I have been getting pretty consistent low 20’s every fill up. This is a new to me 4Runner and I have been happy with the mpg.

Here's an odd thing: Most of the time I fill the tank when it gets down to about half full. Sometimes a bit more, or a bit less. On these occasions the 4Runner tells me I have a range of 283 miles. But when I wait until it's down to a quarter tank or less, and then fill it, it says I have a range of 294 miles.

Not really a great example, but..

Friday I drove with a jet ski trailer and 2 jet skis, (2,000 lbs) from Grand Lake CO over the continental divide via Trail Ridge, through Rocky Mountain National Park, through Loveland then Fort Collins. Lots of traffic. It was a 5,000 drop. I got 20.8 MPG. Given the traffic and climbing I was pretty happy. Though driving Trail Ridge with a trailer did have a pucker factor, but jet skiing on Lake Grand, Shadow Mountain and Granby was amazing.

It towed this “lighter load” like a champ.

Saw a sweet white 4R that passed me and flashed his lights, big lift, big tires, heavily modified. Got several comments on mine as well. 4R love is out there in em’ hills.

I was getting about 18.5 city with my Goodyear SUV tires, forget the exact model, but now I am down a full mpg with my Costco Michelin XLT tires same size. Dang.

This is just based on the computer.

Haven't gone on any long road trips yet to check highway mpg.

PS- I drive like a granny. 117,000 miles. 2011

I have a 2017 with about 45k on it. GOBI Stealth with a rifle type case on top, 2" lift with stock size BFG KO2s @ 38psi. I checked it today and on the interstate I get about 17-18 @ 70MPH and in the city I have been getting around 14-15. Towing a 3800 lb. RV Trailer I get 7mpg @ 70MPH and 10mpg @ 65MPH. All based on the computer....

2016 Trail, only modification is some Cooper AT3'S. 90% of my driving is city stop and go as it's my daily commuter (15 miles each way). Does make weekend trips for camping on the highway and I can generally squeeze out low 20's then.

On my stock 2015 SR5 4x4 with a full roof steel rack unloaded (70ishlbs.) I'm getting 17.3MPG. This is a mix of city and highway driving with a majority of it being on street. When I first got the rig about a year ago I was getting 17.7MPG.
