Fake Power Antenna (or Really Stubby Antenna)
So a while back my power antenna died. I didn't feel like dropping $60 on the Tacoma antenna mod, 'cause I hardly listen to the radio anyway. So I unplugged the motor and left the mast up.
Then while wheeling recently I caught it on a limb and bent the mast over. I pulled the antenna from the fender and was then left with an ugly hole. Hmmm..My wheels started to turn....I had been using a NMO mount with a bottom loaded chrome whip for my CB (was lying around.) This was mounted in the hood channel already. I had just added a Wilson Flex antenna with Firestiks' FireFlex cable for said wheeling trip (Wow, what an improvement.) So now I had this unused antenna with cable going right to where my radio is. I cut the PL259 off and soldered on a standard motorola antenna connector and plugged the radio into it. It worked! Ok, next step....That hole.
After opening the power antenna up to see what was inside, I cut out the important bits.
Then I took a bolt, cut the head off, bored a hole thru it and welded a chunk of antenna into it.
Add a washer and wing nut...
And Viola, a plug for my ugly hole that cost $0
