Rear 3rd Member Questions

Hey guys,

The time has come to rebuild my rear diff. Been having a little bit of a roaring noise and vibration lately and started checking around. Low and behold there's about a 1/4 - 1/2 inch of slack when i grab the drive shaft where it inters the housing. My future father in law runs a shop/scrapyard and has a 84 PU laying around, he wont sell me just the 3rd though. He wants $150 for the entire rear axle. So my plan is to pull that and rebuild the 3rd to slap into my truck. What master install kit to y'all recommend? How do the kits from TG/wabfab compare to the Yukon kits? Also will a 3rd with the Elocker out of a 3rd Gen 4runner fit? All info/comments/advice is greatly appreciated! If anyone has anything for sell hit me up, I would like to throw a lunch box locker in while I've got everything tore apart but cant drop the dough on a new one being a broke college student.

Thanks,
Wade

Why buy another third if you're just planning on rebuilding the new one? Just rebuild the one you have or check out the newer one and if it looks good, just put it in and run it. You also have to make sure your ring gears are the same ratio.

Personally, I would just buy a rebuild kit and rebuild the one you have. Or find a shop and take the third to them to have them rebuild it. Setting up gears is somewhat intimidating but check out Zuk's site if you think you're up to it.

As far as lunchboxes go, I bought mine on ebay for less than $250 new. Used ones are usually around $200 and need new alignment pins/springs. IMHO, a used one needs to be a smoking deal or just go for the new one.

Good Luck

You should have some slack in the rear pinion. 1/2 a turn is a bit much if its only 1/4 I think your good. Does the pinion have side ways slop is the pinion seal leaking IMO those are better indicators of issues with the pinion. There are a lot of things in the drive train that can cause a vibration and noise. Did you check the u joints and axle bearings? The rear bearing of the T/C is also a point to check.

You should be able to find 4.10 4 cyl 3rds for around $50 anywhere.
Check local 4WD club sites, or Toyota sites like this.

Thanks for the input. As for buying a used 3rd its just precautionary incase something is bad wrong with mine. I'm having a buddy of mine who has done multiple rear end setups do the work. The best way I can explain is the slack isn't rotational, its up and down.

Well that isn't right! Typically once it is that sloppy you would expect to see the pinion seal leaking. It is nice having spare parts to swap at a moments notice and I always have a spare 3rd and to date I have never needed to replace it.
You may want to jack it up and put the truck in gear and see if you can find the noise. Secure the truck, you don't want a bigger issue..... good luck

Any problems with TG install kits?

Alright. I got the rebuild kit I ordered from TG in the mail last week. Pulled the third this weekend and sent it off with my buddy to rebuild it . Tonight he calls me and tells me there's an issue with the install kit. Apparently one of the pinion bearings is to big and is causing interference with the carrier. He's tried everything he knows, even set it up with no shims what so ever and had the same issue. Now I don't know anything at all about setting up differentials, but my buddy does. He's done hundreds of them. He can't seem to figure the problem out. Any input? I'm calling TG in the morning.

I'm thinking you've got a setup kit that doesn't match your ring and pinion. Check the part numbers and see if FailGear sent you what you ordered.

From what I gathered on that post on pirate is that to save money,
Companies are selling the same bearing kits for two different applications? Even though there is an obvious difference in the bearing size. If so that's wrong. I checked the part number that was on my receipt they sent and it was right, but that's not to say they didn't pull the wrong part.

Not quite like that, no. It's actually Toyota that threw a wrench in the works, by changing up to the long pinion in '86-'89 22re trucks but keeping the old "4cyl" third and carrier. They had the stronger "v6" third and carrier that also used the long pinion, and used it in '86-'87 turbo models and '88-'89 V6 models, but it wasn't until '90 that all trucks got that same "V6" third (and long pinion head gears) regardless of motor.

FWIW, I knew the difference between the SPH and LPH bearings, but I didn't realize that 86-89 22re trucks got the 4cyl carrier but LPH gears until I reread that Pirate link for myself. Obviously the guy at TG didn't either.

this is why I use a differential company for that type of thing.
I wouldn't ever consider using TG over Randy's ring and pinion for differential parts.
sure, it may cost a tiny bit more, but you are dealing with knowledgeable people, and quality parts.

I wanted to say this, but I'm the guy that recommended the Ron's Machining Ebay store up top and it looks like he didn't know the difference either, so I decided to keep my mouth shut. :D

So I called TG today... After talking to one of there "techs" I'm even more irate. He admitted that they knew of this problem, and have had other customers call and tell them about it. But yet nothing on their website warns people of this problem. He told me that he would have to talk to his sales manager to see if they could refund me my money. He called me back later this evening, and they will refund my money. However I can't really afford to wait another two weeks to ship this kit back,
Wait for my refund and then wait on another kit to come in the mail. I'm going to pick up the pinion bearing I need locally.

Just in case any one ever has this issue or just wants to know, the proper National bearing part # is 32307W. I have a call in to Trail Gears sales manager to see if they are going to make this issue right and refund me the price of this new bearing... We shall see how this one goes.
