This weekend will actually be the last weekend I have access to a press before I change jobs. Press work is only required if you choose to do bearings though. If it has been leaking for awhile your grease may be flushed out of the bearing which in turn would fail in time. If you have access to a press you are welcome to my homebrew tools.

I don't have access to a press so it would have to go to the shop. Sounds like I might see you this weekend in Ellsworth.

I don't even have a breather extension! Just a stock Toyota breather.

Went up there yesterday afternoon, and all the service advisor could say is well set up another appointment to look at it monday. So we'll see how it goes monday. Ive been very patient so far, but now im starting to get annoyed.

When I did my breather extension I used the Toyota breather plug.

I used a Toyota breather, but the plastic bodied one that has free flow in both directions. It resembles one I saw on a 1st gen Tacoma front, but I've forgotten what the original fitment was for.

It took three tries for my buddy's shop to cure my '99's rear axle seal oil leak. I think he ended up shifting the position the seal rides on a tad, or the retainer, maybe doubling up on the seals (it's been some time, knock wood). Point is, the area where the seal rides can get worn enough that oil is going to seep unless you move things around a bit or replace very spendy parts. Wiped out my brakes each time too, but charged me for the whole job only once. A good shop stands behind its work. Shop screws up, it's on the shop, not you.

Sounds like the Toy dealer's techs just know how to R&R, not really how to fix stuff. Personally, I would (politely) work my way up through Toy's chain of command. That's pi$$poor diagnosis and justifies a credit. The techs shouldn't be learning their trade on your dime and the stealership shouldn't be profiting through sloppy diagnosis or work. GL!

They got a different tech to look at it this time. This time they replaced the bearing retainer ring, said the old one was pitted up. I hope this is the end of it.
I'm about to put a 700 mile trip on it so we'll see how it does.
