Rear Axle Shaft

Hi - I've been looking to replace the left rear axle shaft in my '99 with the original OEM part. V6, 5-speed, ABS, locker, 16' wheels. Using the VIN at the dealer, the computer shows two axle options. One says "with VSC and 16 inch wheel" (Part# 42311-35400) and the other one says "with 4Wheel*66" (Part# 42311-35350).

Would anyone be able to explain the difference between the two axle shafts, and/or which one is the correct option for my axle housing? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The cost of a new shaft is pretty pricey, so want to make sure I order the correct one with the matching bearings and seals!

Have you plugged your VIN into some of the online Toyota parts dealers and seen what the computer suggests? Many have drawings that might help decode the difference.
Also, maybe find a dealer parts guy who really knows a lot....in my area, there is one knowledgable Toyota parts guy for about every five know-nothings.

I show part # 42311-35400. Same left or right. Your looking at over $500 per side for new OEM (axle, bearing, retainer, ABS Rotor, and seal)

Good idea about trying the VIN on online Toyota parts dealers....unfortunately not much luck there either. Even though the parts diagrams are helpful, they don't show any physical differences between the different axle parts numbers, so there's no way (that I can tell) to compare the image in the diagram with the actual part on my axle.

If part #42311-35400 is the correct axle shaft, would you be able to let me know what the corresponding part numbers are for the bearing, retainer, seals, etc.?

BEARING (FOR REAR AXLE SHAFT) Replaced by: 90363-40020-77
RETAINER, REAR AXLE BEARING, INNER RH LH 42423-20010
ROTOR, SKID CONTROL, REAR 43517-35010
RING, SNAP (FOR REAR AXLE SHAFT) 90520-36045

The axle uses two retainers but really only one needs to be replaced because it is the one the seal rides on. That is, of course, that who ever is doing the press work on the shaft can press them off instead of cutting them, which is what I did and I had never done it before. Also, if you cut them off there's the possibility of "grooving" the shaft, which if that happens under the inner retainer (the one the seal rides on) that may allow a passage for gear oil to escape) I was also able to reuse the ABS rotor, which was pressed off along with the 2 retainers, and I just put some sleeve retainer on it for good measure although when I pressed it back in place it definitely was going any place. You might be able to reuse the snap ring also, but it's cheap enough.
One more thing, there's lot's of conjecture on how to do the axle seals. Seems like a lot of guys get them done in a shop then they have to have them redone so beware of how they are done. I did mine completely including all the press work using the information on this site. Bone dry for 10,000 miles. Good luck!

The axle shaft part number says "VSC". Is that another way of saying "ABS"?

As well, I'd prefer to press the bearings, etc. myself, as you did. What type of press setup do you use?
 
Good point! I prefer to keep the truck as stock as possible, but OEM can certainly be cost prohibitive.

Does the OEM shaft (with ABS) come with the skid control rotor, or must that part be ordered separately?

All separate.

And to answer your previous question, I used a 20 ton press, which is overkill. Most important is that it's tall enough to put the shaft asy under. Should have an adjustable shelf. Also, I had many different pieces of steel and a bearing separator like this:

Had to be a little creative and patient in setting up the axle in the right position. I also remember that the backing plate with the axle and studs wouldn't sit quite right and wouldn't fit down between the two shelf halves as it was being pressed so I had to raise it up with wood and rest it on the backing plate so the axle could be pushed down. This will make more sense once you starting doing it. I wish I had that SST for doing the bearings as it took me about 3 or 4 hours to figure it out and get it all off and on. Good luck!
