Rear bumper step trim removal

How do you take the step piece off the rear bumper? It seems like they are 2 separate pieces, but I cannot figure out how to take it off. It's faded and I'm going to plastidip it.

Nope, just one piece. If you crawl underneath and look, it's pretty simple to figure out. Do yourself a favor though - skip the dip and go ahead and paint it.

Its raining like crazy right now ... I actually just finished them last night. Gonna wait till I can get out there without getting drenched to put them on. Prob gonna b Monday but here is a look with them stacked inside ...

Will do haha. I've been doing the same thing you've been doing haha my own "operation blackout" I just finished the emblems and redid a wheel because the tire changer ripped it to shreds. Btw how aggressive is the texture?

Best way I know how to explain it ... maybe like some 100-150 grit sandpaper. It applied very smooth and even, not chunky at all ... I expected it to be more textured but I like it. I think any more texture and it would actually look weird. there is a close up at the start of my thread I think ... it show the texture a little better ...

That's exaclty what I was thinking haha that's why I asked how much it was textured. I can't wait to see it mounted :D. Did you prime it? Or just spray away.

I coated them with plasti-dip. They're holding up very well haha. I've been on numerous trails that were basically big briar patches and they aren't even scratched (just don't get them near a tire changer haha. They have about 4/5 coats each. About $30 for a complete set of tires (spare included). I was quoted almost $400 to have them painted haha so I like my savings.

To remove the step piece the hatch has to be open. You can see how it snaps into the bumper from below. You don't want to break the snaps. Use a plastic putty knife or a plastic trim tool to pry it up.

I painted my bumper piece with Duplicolor Bumper and Trim paint a couple of years ago and it's held up very well. I think I got it at Autozone.

Ha ha ... this is a long story ...

Plastic parts: Cleaned with Ajax/sanded (heavier grit)/Rinsed/Sanded (Lighter grit)/Ajaxed/3 coats of Adhesive promoter/5 coats of Rusto Bed liner

Chrome Bumper: Cleaned with Ajax/sanded with palm sander/Rinsed/Sanded (Lighter grit)/Ajaxed/2 Coats of Self Etching primer/5 coats of Rusto Bed liner

Prep was a royal pain in the A! <--- Not completely true, I'm just anal and at the same time extremely ADD. I just knew it was not something I wanted to do again any time soon ...

Nice haha it looks like it paid off! The wheels I just sanded down any rough edges and then sprayed it on, haha the joy of plasti-dip. Do you think for the rear step Id need to do much? It's already kind of textured so I was thinkin about a light sanding and then off to bed liner.

Looks amazing ... How long has it been done? I see so many mixed opinions on Plasti-Dip wheels but I am convinced if you clean it well and coat it generously will probably hold up well ... Also saw a post of someone who coated with Plasti and then painted on top of that ... Caught my attention but I prob wouldn't do that ... I am almost sold on those wheels they are sharp :thumb3: Nice job.

Thanks! I really appreciate it haha. I did it about a month ago. I honestly love it, I plastipped my spoiler and decals too. You can plastidip literally anything haha I'm currently plastidipping my phone case because it was too slick. The great thing is if I don't like it then I can peel it off.

I would lightly sand it and any scratches well ... I would definitely use the adhesive promoter ... it is cheap and really only adds about 10-15 min extra work ... which could be the difference in the bed liner adhering well. I got it at auto zone and it might have been $4-5. Kind of cool stuff ... it was like it absorbed into the plastic, then gradually built to a light coat on top.

I plan to use it on my fenders, its cheap and really easy to use, can't see the harm.

Are you gonna bed line your fenders too? That'd be cool haha. I'm also considering bed lining the little plastic step piece on the inside of the doors, but I'm not sure if the black bed liner would look right with the grey interior.

Yep ... all the way around ... & I plan on doing a number on the back too ... (License surround, bumper, trim, spoiler, and most likely eventually the roof rack). I know its bedliner but I question its durability in a high traffic-under foot situation (like the step piece) on plastic. I may be totally wrong but ... :rolleyes:

In my head, its gonna look pretty cool, I like the idea of the texture next to the gloss paint all shined up. We will c ... I gotta get some good weather, this rain is ridiculous and quite frankly PISSING ME OFF! :rain:
