Rear Bumpers

Someone crashed into my car and insurance is sending me a nice 1200$ check. Thinking I might just turn around and get a nice aftermarket bumper. Anyone have any recommendations? The car might look weird with the bumper being the only thing I have upgraded right now but you've gotta start somewhere!

Do you just want a rear bumper or something that relocated the spare tire to the rear bumper?

$1200 will get you a couple of choices on a steel rear bumper, but you're probably looking at needing rear springs to offset the weight also. The 2 I am aware of weigh in at 140-150 pounds each without swing out tire carriers. I got my CBI including shipping for a little over $1200 total earlier this year. I remember it was $999 for the basic model. The new SSO rear bumper can be had for $999 + shipping in it's base model, but you are looking at a wait time. The SSO is nice because there is NO cutting involved on your old bumper cap. You just remove the whole thing and bolt on the SSO.

If I were you, I'd strongly consider why you would get the rear swing out.

If you have no reason to put a tire back there, ie. it's too big to fit underneath, it may be more of a hassle than it's worth.

Remember, you'll have to swing it out every time you want to open your trunk.

That said, they look cool as hell.

You might think about starting low profile but with the mounting spindle for a spare swing out for later upgrade. It would be less obvious than having a swing out on a factory setup. But who knows? Toyota sold the RAV4 for years with a rear mounted spare and nobody thought that looked out of place. And the rear swing outs nowadays are leaps ahead of what they used to be as far as usability and durability. I personally opted out because while I liked the look I knew I wouldn't have the chance to use it often enough to justify the additional cost, and the rear camera view has grown on me. I have however already dragged the new bumper enough to have justified getting that! Here is said CBI for your perusal. I wanted buy the SSO, simply because it would have kept to the theme with my front bumper. But I was impetuous, had money burning a hole in my pocket, and the CBI was available immediately while the SSO was still under development. I have no regrets.

A rear bumper is heavy so you MUST get new springs, it will rust when you scratch it, if you get a swing out the camera is gone or must be relocated. Be sure what you want to do...and know what you are getting into.

I also think your insurance company may have shorted you, I got more for less damage 4 years ago.

Also, even if you get an after market bumper, some part of the old bumper cover remains on the car! So unless the upper 6 inches or so of your cover is undamaged all the way around you'll end up replacing it anyway.

BUT If you ware going to be upgrading/lifing, then sure, why not start now. If the upper 6 inches of your current cover are good then a regular CBI if fine.

If you don't get the swing out then you can wait on the springs till you lift the front too. I had my rear CBI on for months without springs in the back, it was fine.

And the other day someone actually hit it in a parking lot much like what you show, but the joke was on them, their bumper was probably torn up judging from the amount of pain scrapped off onto mine A little elbow grease and I'll forget it ever happened!
