No problem with the imageshack comment. I was having major computer/photo issues.

Specs:
It'll be fairly short. 3"-4" deep drawers.
Two Drawers ~30" deep and a flip top for a spare CV
Bolted down
Slide out counter tops
Movable tie down points
The size of the cargo area (with seats up)
Secondary extension to complete the sleeping platform forward

Updated (2/7/11)
The frame is made from 3/4"x 5.5" pine and steel reinforcements

The cabinet closed (still need some drawer pulls)

The drawers are 30" long

Both drawers have a work top that pulls out. The drawer supports them and traps them closed

There are 14 threaded points, in the steel frame, that I can screw in eye bolts to tie things down

There is a compartment that holds my come-a-long, shovel and spare CV axle

I built the sleeping extensions. It's two pieces so I can have both seats down and room for larger items and sleeping for one.

Or sleeping for one with the seat up.

Or sleeping for two.

I still have to stain and poly the extensions. First I'm going to rework how they attach to the main unit. I'll be using some hinges. I also want to build another extension that will hold my fridge and will still have some room for a second persons feet when sleeping.

im going to make one thats a box that goes between the wheel wells and has a subwoofer box made into it.

My buddy and I made one of those for me, its not completely finished but check out my build thread in my sig.

edit: its on page 9 and I need some updated pics... man, I need to get those headlights and HIDs in too. this weather has been killing my chances to work on this thing.

Sure, you would have to do some measuring. If you want to sleep on it you will need to build an extension and maybe fill some gaps. I wonder if the top is strong enough to sleep on without collapsing it, especially at the drawer opening. This is the main reason I have two drawers.

Im on my third version. My first was big, deep and single drawer. Just to hold stuff. It took up too much room. My second was a quick, before a week to Moab, single sided cubbie/slot setup. It gave me storage under my bed and added width. This version was over the wheelwell. This, my third, is lo-pro that gets me the storage and raises my bed up toward the top of the wheelwell. This also gives me more height to sit up better.

Everyone Please strap it down somehow. If you flop that could be a major headache.

building one with a sub enclosure is a bit tricky, mine has a 12" sub box in it. do you plan on sleeping on it? the problem I have run into is even though I have super strong plexi over the sub opening, I still have some rattle where the plexi is vibrating against my sleeping platform when its out. I am gonna try some weatherstriping foam and see how that does

see in this last pic the that ledge on the inner side is where the sleeping platform sits, and its right up against the plexi from the sub enclosure, so the plexi rattles against the sleeping platform... minor design tweaks...

Well holy crap, this super nice guy had bought forum member "jsmarine" 4rnr and wanted to get rid of the storage box.

What a deal! Looking forward to fine tuning it for my upcoming trip to CO - it will be perfect!! Free is perfect for my budget.

p.s. that 4rnr is totally badass, neat to see one built as that one up close, never seen anything like it in person.

I just started building mine last night and here's what I have so far. I used MDF because I had a ton of it laying around, so I know the first time it gets wet it's done. I'm going to paint it with some exterior paint and carpet it so hopefully that will help. I somewhat copied Mr. Leary's idea, just without the drawer. I made the shelf tall enough to get a spare tire underneath so I could carry 2 spares (1 on the roof). I'm going to have flip up doors covering the side compartments and leave the main compartment open to the back, and I'm going to put d-rings in the top to tie down ice chest and plastic containers. Not the fanciest, but I'll have about $30 in it finished haha.

This is a really great thread. I'm looking at doing something like this in the near future. Is there anyone else out there that would like to show off their handy work to give us all a few more ideas?

Here is what I designed/built. I decided to use 1/2" & 3/4" MDF because it was cheap and easy to work with (for the most part).

With tail gate open

Up close

Flip up lid for access from window

Pull out drawers

Left drawer contents

Right drawer contents

Tie down and drawer latch

Space on either side of the box

Closed drawer and latch system

I used spray on truck liner for the inside of the drawers as well as the areas like drawer fronts & lid that will see the most abuse. The rest of it I just spray painted flat black with rattle can. The double decker lid is still in use and locked into place, which helps keep the box from moving while driving. So far, I have not heard even one squeak or shift from it while driving, but haven't taken it off-road yet.

Thanks! Man I've been slacking so bad. This project has been on hold for a long while. It looks pretty much the same as it did before. Don't have the exact measurements. I'd like to make a thread for it when its finished. Maybe I'll take some and post them up. I really need to find some time and motivation to finish it. Here is the sleeping platform part when the seats are removed.
