Rear chrome "wing" removal help

Hey guys, I'm planning on removing the rear chrome piece to paint it this weekend. I remember reading that it needs to be removed from the inside. I looked through the 2010 collision repair manual Harper posted and can't find how to remove the inner panel on the hatch. Can anyone help me out?

I would recommend using Plastidip and saving yourself a whole lot of work.
I pulled mine off about 8 months ago and did the whole deal (removed lettering, adhesive, etc.) and painted with Krylon. Now, I realize Plastidip would have looked just as good, if not better. Much easier and reversible.
Just my two cents on the matter.

I appreciate the advice Shawn. But I'm so happy with the way the Rustoleum paint turned-out on my front grille, I want to try and get an exact match on the rear. Turns out I got called in to work over the weekend and I plan on doing it today....I'll let you know if I regret it later.:thumb3:

Well, the rear garnish came off easy enough, thanks to Antman's write-up. The sanding and painting went fine too. Then it all went to s**t when I glued the "4runner" back on. I used liquid epoxy and it didn't set-up then ran all over the place over night. A little voice in my head told me this wasn't the ideal adhesive, but it's all I had and I was in a hurry to finish...so there you go. :shrug:

Anyway, I pulled off the letters and stripped-off the residue. The hard part will be salvaging the letters. So....I have learned:

-Taking the rear garnish off is pretty easy.

-Listen to that little voice and do it right the first time.

Damn it, Shawn....I think you might be right! I guess my thoughts were I wanted a more permanent, exact match for the front. I also assumed the time that I would take masking-off all those letters and around the garnish would be about what I would spend doing it the "right" way. In the end, I think both ways work when done properly. I just dropped the ball on the adhesive.
