Rear Dif Cover/Gasket..

Has anyone replaced theirs? I see a lot units out there with drain plugs.. I have to start thinking about replacing mine as i have a leak and i smell what i think is burnt Gear oil.. I guess work better than others? I am also curious as to what this might cost. I'm hoping that it isn't too bad.

Unfortunately there's no cover/gasket to replace, it's not like some of the American brands that have the access cover. Mine developed a leak at the cover a while back so I had to drain all the fluid out, clean the cover of all oil residue, and seal up the holes.

I took a punch and enlarged the pinhole and took some JB weld putty and kinda made a patch over the hole. Once it dries and you've refilled the fluid you can take it for a spin to ensure you patched it and there aren't any other holes to fill. Then you can spray some primer or rust preventative on it and you should be good for a while. Mine doesn't leak anymore but it definitely weakened in that area now...something to think about.

I would add fluid to your rear diff ASAP if you have a leak, you sure don't want to toast your bearings and gears. Might as well get a replacement rear end if you get to that point, luckily I caught mine in time and you did too!
 
I'm going to have that done this weekend... Do you know the signs if any? What i should look out for? I'm pretty sure i do smell burnt lube.

if your bearings are toast you'd hear and feel a growl from the rearend. you're probably ok, just top it off asap. only takes a socket and ratchet and bottle of fluid. Used fluid sometimes has an unusual smell
 
Thank you for the information... I'll stop and get a bottle tomorrow. I'm in NY so filler port has never been popped before.. I'm the original owner which means rust and lots of it.

I would open the filler pluyg BEFORE you open the drain plug. They can get pretty stuck and rusted on and you don't want to drain everything out before you know you can fill it back up again.

You might want to post a picture to see what the damage is. I've seen some really bad diffs.

Looks like it might just be leaking from the fill up plug. It does have a gasket behind it and you might get away with just replacing that gasket when you top it off.

You can spray it with brake cleaner to clean off the old oil and see if it still leaks.
 
Yeah you're leaking through the "cover". You housing doesn't look too rusty though and your leak doesn't look like it's a bad one.

Mine was a crappy job, thought I only had a pinhole leak and 1 leak turned in to 3 or 4. Of course each time I thought I had it fixed i'd find another area of seepage (I think that's a word) and i'd have to drain the fluid and reclean the area again. Someone else might have a better fix than the JB weld putty but it worked good for me in patching it up...bought some time before replacing the housing assembly anyways. Hope you're able to break that plug loose without any drama, maybe add some heat to it before even trying.

One more thing, remove the fill plug before attempting to remove the drain plug just in case there is an issue with the drain plug.
 
I was told about the brake cleaner trick before .. I planned to clean it up too. I have droplets in the driveway. I'll work on this shortly.

Very true, rust may have ruined your gasket mating surface and caused it to leak. I actually had a slow drip on mine, yours doesn't look that bad.

Since it's the rear diff you can use a socket on it. A breaker bar will help. You can get a propane torch to heat the fill plug first, then use a socket. Proceed to the drain plug after the fill plug. Have new gaskets on hand before you do anything (and gear oil).

If there are holes, maybe it can be spot welded?
 
It's got 175k on it....

The Parts guy at the Toyo Dealer asked me the same thing. Parts are pretty cheap... The Cap with the magnet was less that$20 and the other was less than $15
