Rear diff lock light

I followed what the manual said to engage rear diff
Stopped truck
Hit rear diff button
Light flashes red

The light just keeps flashing and does not go solid

Thoughts?

One thing I read on this forum is that you should try turning the wheel a bit while rolling forward slowly to help the rear diff line up properly in order to engage the locker. I am not sure how helpful that is since I've yet to personally try it out, but it sounds like it makes sense. I have experienced a similar issue as you...sometimes it engages quickly, sometimes I have to roll forward for quite a while before it engages.

Other than that, make sure you are going less than 5 mph or so, but you would know that since you claim you did :rtfm: right? :wave:

thanks for offer of assistance, but nothing seems to be working. seems pointless that we would have to drive and turn the wheel to engage. what if we were stuck and needed to lock rear axle? anyway, i guess i will just not have a locking rear diff until i get it to toyota to figure out. my sales guy did not understand how to work the heated seats so i wont go asking him how it works.

It's much easier to lock when one of the rear wheels is slipping. I'm sure you were on dirt or snow. Were you testing or actually on a trail where you thought you needed it? How far did you roll forward trying to engage?
You were in 4L but what other settings? 1st gear? Did you have ATRAC on? what about MTS?

You must have a different manual than me, because mine is pretty clear.

Before using the rear differential lock system:
Step 1 Stop the vehicle, shift the shift lever to N and shift the front- wheel drive control lever into L4 to see if this is sufficient. If this has no effect, additionally use the rear differential lock system.
Step 2 Be sure the wheels have stopped spinning.
Step 3 Press the rear differential lock switch.
Step 4 Gently depress the accelerator pedal.
After the rear differential is locked, the indicator will come on.

I posted this same question a few weeks ago, my trail does the same thing. I was on snow and unable to try the turning trick. Seems like an awful long engagement time to me. Keep us posted what the dealer finds
