Rear Dome Light not working on Door setting

I've recently purchased a '97 limited and the rear dome light doesn't work in door mode. I have done the basics, checked the bulb, checked the switch on the light with a 12v power source, but everything checks out ok. A friend at work said the rear dome light door setting only turns on when the back hatch is open. Is this correct? If it is, does anyone know where the rear hatch switch is? Does the light come on as soon as the hatch is poped or after it's lifted? Mercury switch?

yea, theres the cabin light that lights when any of the 4 doors are open. then theres the rear dome which lights only when the rear hatch is open a little more than half way.

perhaps they did away with that due to draining the battery or something?

mine doesnt turn on till its around 1/2 way up....

Just went and checked on my 2k, the light came on as soon as I popped the latch, didn't even lift the hatch more than an inch.
