Rear end help

I have my 86 4runner and I"m about to put on a 88-89 rear end. I was curious if I should go with the 4 banger or V6 rear end? Also if I get 4.88 gears is it the same as the front? I can't can't seem to find front 4.88 gears. Would the back be the same? Does anyone know of any place or website I could find front 4.88 gears?

I would get the V6 or 22RE Turbo rear end, they are stonger.

If you change the rear diffs to a 4.88 ratio, you have to change the front diff also.
The front and rear need the same gear ratio as well as tire size, no substitutions.

Yes this is true that is of course you use 4wd?

Thanks for the info on the rear end. I understand that I need to change front and back to 4.88 but is the back gear the same as the front just turned around. Is it possible for me to buy 2 rear end gears and use one on the front?

Not if your IFS the front diff is 7.5" and the rear is a 8" diff.

ya i know i would need to find that out. but I'm talking about if i use a rear 4.88 7.5 gear in the front. would it work or is there another 4.88 gear i need for the front

and im about to put a 89 v6 4runner auto rear end in my 86 4 cylinder 5 speed do you know if it will bolt right in or do i need to modify anything?

and the front end as well im thinking of changing with the v6 front pumpkin will it just fit in

No you can not just turn it around and run it in the front. yes you can turn the housing around but the gears in side dont work like that, they have to be reverse cut gears. Think of it like this if you have your third member in front of you (so you are facing the rear with the front to your back) and you turn the companion flange so that the axles are turing forward (should be clockwise). Then imagine that you pick the axle up and put it in the front and contniue turning the flange clockwise, now with axle in the front axles that were turning forward now are turning to the rear. Hope this helps.

Well if you are getting a complete parts truck, you'll have both the front and rear diffs to swap over to your truck, right?
That's the answer.
