Rear has a burning smell...

Hello All,

Didn't find much in the search function, so I thought I'd poll our community.

Own a 2016 SR5 Premium 4x4, which I purchased in April of 2016. I have 7,500 miles on my T4R, lift in the front is an OEM King Coilover which is at 2" of lift and CST billet UCA. In the rear there is no lift, I've only installed the matching King shock with reservoirs. My wheels are TRD Pro 17x7 with 265 Nitto G2 AT's.

Here is the issue, when the truck gets driven more then 15 miles, when I park, it smells like something is burning or melting. It is coming from both the rear left and right wheel areas. I've triple checked and there is nothing rubbIng whatsoever. I am beginning to think it is the diff or 4x4 in the truck.

Has anyone experienced anything like this?

I've heard of the mystery burning smell but last I read it was undiagnosed, and comes/goes. Heat it up and get the dealer to throw it on a rack and sniff around. On a side note if I could rewind to 7500k I would change out my rear diff oil...

my 2016 has no lift all stock 5K miles on it. I also did smell the burning rubber when use on hywy. for an hour or more at 70-80MPH.. I think it is the rubber exhaust holders. I slide them out from the heat area and it did not return ..

I think that is the problem as well. I also think that after so many miles the burning smell goes away even if you don't move them. Almost like whatever it was making the smell gets burned away. Anyway OP it is no issue.

Thanks friends. I will move the rubber exhaust hangers and report back. Would be great if it was this simple. Appreciate the thoughtful responses.

Poor news...moving rubber hanger mounts further away from the exhaust system did not repair the issue. I am confident now the smell is the inner liner of the rear fenders. Not sure what type of material that is but it smells like it is coming from there.

Who cares? They all do it and it's not hurting anything. It clears up after a while, mine did anyways.

Funny this thread came about today. I've got a 2016 with almost 15K on it and I get this smell every now and then. I only notice it after stopping quickly after sustained highway driving or after going on the trails for a while. I could never find out what it was but I figured it was something that didn't matter. Glad to know I'm not the only one out there

Had same problem....disappeared after 6 months or so
