Rear Hatch Strut Options

Bought the Strongarm 4286 @ rockauto and used the nylon bushings and washers posted from lowes.
6 months ago holding up like new, have had cold snaps in double digits they worked fine.

I emailed Strutwise last night. It comes out to $48 per strut. He advised on declaring the value of the struts to $5 to avoid border fees.

I recently installed the Strongarm 4286's and they have been perfectly fine. They push the hatch up all the way but pretty gently. Have not tested in super cold weather and we'll see how they hold up long term.

StrutWise is great and the owner is easy to work with. He did a pair of struts for me a couple of years ago and they came back super powerful -- honestly too strong for my liking. Might want to ask him to build you a "mild" set of struts.

Anyone have experience with either of the strongman struts, or monroe? Shaun & timmythetoolman just released a video on this repair, it looks like the stronger strongman struts are still $$$. I am wondering how the monroe hold up, as it seems the lower level strongman struggle in the cold weather. I have been needing this repair for sometime, however was able to revitalize my stock struts using a little white lithium grease, must have just improved the seal, and it will remain up unassisted in warm weather now, as long as the window is up.. Either way interested in the better strongman struts, or an equivalent.

They called me telling they were delayed due to having to get the from Japan as the US was completely out.

Cool, I hadn't realized the OEM ones were this cheap. I had in my head that they were $100+ each. Looks like you got the "cold spec" ones whereas the -35010 options are not.

Those look promising but that’s the first I’ve seen of a replacement rubber bushing. The Teflon spacers have been the go-to for worn bushings. I went that route when I installed mine and they were quiet until this last month when it got “cold” lol. They made no noise until that point since I installed earlier in the year. Now they make a little noise regularly :shrug:

I’ve been pricing around this morning at local 3D printing operations and got back a quote of $80. Maybe an online 3D printing business can do it for something reasonable. If not I guess I’m using nylon too

Here’s something I found in another thread here

I found a suitible replace ment for the grommet at lowe's. it works perfect for a replacement. You have to work it on but it works. It is a grommet with OD=5/8" by ID=3/8". Part# 881255. Hope this helps!

Toyota says they are for the 4WD cars too. Not sure why 4WD got cold spec and 2WD got Standard.

Most schools have a 3d printer now.

Heck, even I have a 3D printer. They are cheap now and fun to play with.

As a grommet, the 3D printed ABS plastic will "work" but I'd rather use nylon. The ABS will get chewed up fairly quickly. I think it's too hard of a material.

This is good news and thanks for posting.

I wonder why the big price drop? Not used to seeing a big price drop in parts prices that's for sure.

Some sellers still list a price of ~$200 while others are around this price.

Interesting. Curious to know if they are the same KYB struts that came on these trucks new.
Either case, planning to buy a set; mine are toast. Thanks for sharing.

New OEM struts are installed. They look the same as the originals, and they say KYB on them. New brackets and bushings were included as expected.

I had one Strongarm and one Monroe strut, and the former was leaking after 7.5 years, while the latter was not. That combo was never satisfactory, but always held the hatch up after I pushed it all the way up.

The new OEM struts (cold weather version, even though I live in a mild climate I do encounter sub freezing temps) work great! Lift the hatch like they should, and it stays there. Check back in with me 8 years from now to see how they hold up!
