Rear hatch won't open.

The new one I picked up, which was ridiculously expensive, would stay locked when I manually locked it without it connected to the hatch. I had all the plugs disconnected while I installed the new one so I don't know if it would work like that. I would disconnect the wiring off the hatch ECU and then pull the leads off the battery on the truck for 5 min. Then re-attach and try it again. Seems like an issue with the switch on the hatch handle if this does not work.[/QUOTE]

I'll try that before moving on to the hatch handle. Thanks!

My old one would not stay locked. I would shut the hatch and it would immediately unlock.

Yes, it works now! I did need to unplug from ECU and plug back in. All good now except now my key will only turn to the right, not the left on the liftgate! not a huge deal but wondering what happened. Is there a security feature that may have triggered while unplugging things?

No idea man, but you could always try to unplug the truck's battery to do a reset. You would need to do the power window relearn again if you haven't already.

Glad it's working. No security feature that I know of on the lock, pretty sure it's just a switch.

I have a 2007 4Runner that has ran great for the last 165k miles. Now my Trunk wouldn't close randomly. I bungee corded it closed, assumed it was the actuator motor, and bought one off amazon ( Amazon.com: Genuine Toyota Parts 69110-35090 Rear Gate Latch - 69110-35062: Automotive ) Now the hatch will close but not open. Any ideas? The back window still goes up and down if that helps. TIA.

There’s a lot of little tricky combinations of things to try. I’ve had to lock/unlock my driver door 3 times and it did work A few times. Another time it didn’t and had to unconnect/ reconnect battery. The last time I tried everything except for disconnect blue harness into the Ecu for it. I rolled the rear window down by holding down button, and rolled back up holding a couple seconds after it closed and mine reset. Initially my hatch wasn’t closing though, the button just wouldn’t unlock when pushed. If none of that works you may want to double check and make sure the button is working and powered.

I have been reading through this thread today because about 1 week ago my hatch would not open however the rear window does roll down. When I try to open the rear hatch nothing happens, no sound, nothing. I did what others suggested and disconnected the battery. This fixed it for a few days and then the issue returned. It seems that most on this thread then move to replacing the hatch motor which is roughly $250. Would replacing the hatch motor be the logical next step?

Thanks for the help

How did you get the tail gate open to install the actuator? I can’t get the back panel off without opening the trunk door

Dont have to open to get at it.
Take the interior plastic cover off.
One bolt holds the pull handle.
That cover just pulls off, start on a bottom corner. Pull towards inside.
Then the top edge at the window scraper lifts up.

I bought the latch actuator from eBay and although it worked, it's just like before. My symptoms are:

- Can't open the back door with the key off (even if unlocked)
- Rear window will not roll down with key or FOB (the manual switch on dash works)
- When the key is ON, I have to unlock 3 times for the back door to open and close properly.

I've checked all the connections, cleaned them with electronic contact cleaner. No visible rust or bad grounds, everything looks to be in good condition. Any suggestions out there?

Thanks all!

Your issue sounds like an electrical issue. How good are you at testing with the factory service manual in front of you?

Sounds like you need to do the relearn on the rear window. You have to press and hold the rear window button down till about 10 seconds (could be 5 idk) after it bottoms out and then do the same for the top. If you do a search on here it should come up with the procedure.

I worked on installing a momentary-switch to release the rear hatch when inside...the directions are/were easy enough but since tapping into the Body-ECU, it would only lock when the button was pressed...so I removed the t-taps and re-inserted the harness connector into the Body ECU and now nothing works...I got the hatch to lock but it was all manually done...what am I missed? I tied into the green with red stripe and the purple with white stripe...now that I look at the ECU harness wires, there are two purple with white stripe wires...I tried the other one too with no avail...any suggestions?!

I see some others under $70, I might try one of those out at that price. I open mine with a hard wires toggle switch.

I purchased an $80 actuator off eBay and its been working for 6 months no issue. My problem started intermittently, rear hatch wouldn't open on random days, then it slowly got worse and worse. To the point where the only way to open it was to disconnect battery for a few sec, then reconnect. For some reason it would reset and allow me to open once or twice, but then lock up again.

Took about 20 min to swap out and was pretty straight forward.

Same issue on my 06 4runner

Hey just came across your thread and my rear door is having the same issue. Window works fine but the button on the door to release that latch won’t work. Do you remember if you just replaced the whole lock actuator assembly and that fixed it? Or did you also need to do anything with the button switch itself?
