Rear hatch wont stay shut on '03

The rear hatch will not stay shut on my '03. You cannot lock the doors either because of this, anyone else have this issue.

not sure if this will help you but i remember reading something inside my manual with resetting the rear gate. I can look into mine if you dont have one. but i would give that a try.

That sounds like the rear gate window? Not sure but I know there is language about resetting the rear window.

New mechinism

Looks like I have to buy a new lock mechinism. This is a dealer part and will cost some big money. easy to take out and install.

try partznet, theres normally a decent savings on there. Also copartfinder.com, or search around online at for 4th gens that are junked. They are out there, and many will ship.

I JUST had this same problem on my 03 sport. I would go to close the hatch, the mechanism would suck the door shut, wait a second, and then spit it back out. I took the whole lock mechanism out, inspected it and finally decided that it had to be the positioning switch on the actuator itself. The motor worked fine and all the parts moved as they were supposed to. I ended up buying a whole new assembly through an online site. It was $100.00 cheaper than through the local toyota dealer.

I still have the old actuator if you're interested in trying to swap parts. The motor comes off (3 screws and a wire harness) and the positioning switch also can be removed/replaced (2 screws). I'll send it to you if you'll pay shipping and maybe you can make one work with the two.

Also.... I tried removing the neg battery cable and let the vehicle sit for a few hours in hopes that it would reset whatever was causing the problem... Never did work for me.

I guess looking back it wasn't quite 100.00 savings. Go to www.cstoyotaparts.com and look under lift gate, sub category: lock and hardware, sub category: lock. You can get the actual part number from your toyota dealership and cross reference it with cstoyotaparts.com to make sure it's correct. That's what I did. Works great. Genuine toyota parts. $185.88 for the part, and I believe they offer free shipping...

i had this happen a month ago, put the key in the tailgate, unlock it and roll the window down, then wait 5 secs after its down, and then roll it back up, and hold for 5 secs, next unlock it with the key and then push the button on the tailgate, the tailgate will now open, next u close the tailgate back up, remember dont slam it, do a light gentle close , like u purposely left it open, it should close and lock, i knoe it worked for my 07, hope it helps.
